Job Description- SENCO

Job Title:  Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator 

Location: ISL London

Hours: Full-time

Reporting to: Head of Pastoral and works in cooperation with the Primary Principal, the Secondary Principal and Head of Student Support.

Job Purpose

To work on the strategic development of the school's Learning Support Policy while overseeing the day-to-day SEND support operations with the aim of raising achievement levels and supporting SEND students with learning in line with the SEND Code of Practice. To collaborate closely with the Personalised Learning Leader to ensure all learners’ needs are being met. 

Areas of responsibility and key tasks:

• Strategic Direction and Development of SEND Provision in the School alongside the Head of Student Support. 

• Working with Teachers to create a culture of inclusion and personalised learning.

• Updating SEND policy and SEND Information report and ensuring the implementation of the SEND policy. 

•  Support all staff in understanding the needs of SEND students and ensure the objectives to develop SEND are reflected in the school development plan.

•  Lead and oversee the University Placement programme we have with various universities who place their students to have work experience with us and to liaise with their university supervisors. 

•  Coach and Monitor the Placement Students and organise their schedules. 

•  Lead staff development on special educations needs and the provision at ISL.

•  Monitor progress of objectives and targets for students with SEND from teachers' plans; evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning by work analysis and use these analyses to guide future improvements.

•  Liaise with staff, parents, external agencies and other schools to co-ordinate their contribution, provide maximum support and ensure continuity of provision.

•  Provide support to individual students with special needs.

•  Ensure all learning strategies abide by the school’s safeguarding policy and the DfE statutory requirements as outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education and other relevant documentation.

Teaching and Learning:

•  Support the identification of the most effective teaching approaches for students with SEND and disseminate to other staff as appropriate. 

•   Work with staff to develop effective ways of bridging barriers to learning through:

- assessment of needs;

- monitoring of teaching quality and student achievement;

- target setting, including EHCPs/IEP’s;

- developing a recording system for progress.

•  Collect and interpret specialist assessment data to inform practice.

•  Undertake day-to-day co-ordination of SEND students’ provisions through close liaison with staff, parents and external agencies.

•  Design and implement a range of teaching strategies for SEND students that could be utilised. 

Leadership: 

•  Provide professional guidance to staff to support good teaching for SEND students, through written guidance, meetings and mentoring sessions.

•  Support the classroom Learning Facilitators to ensure that students receive appropriate support.

•  Advise on and contribute to the professional development of staff in the area of SEND and building a culture of personalised learning. 

Effective deployment of staff and resources:

•  Advise the Head of Student Support and Head of Pastoral of priorities for expenditure and deployment of staff, and utilise resources with maximum efficiency.

•  Maintain and develop resources, co-ordinate their deployment and monitor their effectiveness in meeting the objectives of school with regards to SEND provision.
