Bruern Abbey

Bruern Abbey is a preparatory boarding school, for 150 boys, which specialises in learning difficulties such as dyslexia. We were Tatler’s Prep School of the Year in 2015 and are proud of our ethos to think differently and have fun.

At Bruern we make every effort to give the boys an action-packed time – be it academic, musical, theatrical, cultural or sporting. Bruern has a few fundamental differences to other prep schools, which allow our boys to succeed at their senior school and in later life.

• We have twice as many English and Maths lessons as a standard prep school would, and there are two teachers in each class for these key subjects

• Reading is taught as a distinct curriculum subject

• Laptops are used in most lessons

• All classes have a maximum of twelve pupils – allowing boys more individual attention in class

What others say?

As well as the Good Schools Guide write-up on Bruer n, Tatler hit the nail on the head when they wrote,

This scruffiest of country preps (think dogs, mud, piles of Beanos) looks after boys with dyslexia, dyspraxia or dyscalculia (often refugees from high-powered places where they have been neglected) and prepares them for CE. Boys flourish and leave for Marlborough, Rugby and Bryanston. The majority weekly board in this mini stately with 30 wooded acres, and are occupied with fly-fishing, clay-pigeon shooting and woodwork. The polo team made the nationals and even some of the youngest boys went on a 260-mile cycle ride to France. Food is a big deal, and with it manners, whether it's the twice-weekly candlelit dinners (parents can come too), plucking partridges or trying bouillabaisse in Oyster Club. Head John Floyd (dyslexic himself) and his wife Hen look after these boys with great care and gusto. We just wish there was a Bruern for girls too.
