Job overview

  • Do you see yourself as the Head of Science in the near future?
  • Are you ready to take on the challenge of leading our high-achieving Science department?
  • Would you enjoy leadership coaching and development to ensure that you are confident and ready for the next step in your career?

This exciting post arises due to the promotion of the Head of Science to an additional senior team role. Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity.  Our Surveys this year showed that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Marys, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents.  We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.

The school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future.  Demand is high, and owing to intense oversubscription, we are 3 years through expansion to 6FE.  We have also won over £5.3m in capital bids in the last 3 years and are enjoying brand new cutting edge facilities as a result – with completely new ‘state-of-the-art’ laboratories.  The school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area.  Over the last 4 years, exam results have risen at both GCSE & A Level.  The ‘Progress 8’ score for 2018 was +0.61, which puts the school in the top 10% in the country.  At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades as well as students enrolling at elite Russell Group Universities has risen significantly over each of the last 4 years with 2018 breaking all school records.

We require an inspiring and ambitious teacher to lead our popular and established Science Department.  The successful candidate would be expected to teach across the full age and ability range, supported by a dedicated and innovative cast of supporting colleagues. The school offers excellent professional development and guidance, with a highly effective and supportive CPD programme. We will provide you with the support you need to be successful in post.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
