The Role

Are you our new Social Sciences (Sociology) Teacher?  This is a  temporary post.  It is available from 1 September 2019 until 31 August 2020.  The post arises as the result of temporary curriculum need.  If the successful candidate is able to offer additional subjects beyond Sociology for which we have a timetable need when the interview takes place, a full time post would be available, otherwise the post will be part time.

The School

We are a successful and heavily oversubscribed 11-18 co-educational, Church of England, comprehensive school of over 1700 students, serving families from the whole of greater Bristol and beyond. We are located at the heart of the city and have a diverse student community with considerable parental support. Our diversity is a strength and something we celebrate. The Redcliffe Sixth Form Centre currently houses more than 600 students taken from our own school and from many other schools across the City.

The School is proud of its academic record, and 82% of grades were at grade 4 (equivalent to a C) or above  this summer.  77% achieved a 4 or above in English and Maths.  Progress 8 is 0.37.  Sixth Form results are also high with a 99% pass rate and 83% at grade C or above (up from 81%).  24% got A* and A grades.  Most Sixth Form students continue on to Higher Education, including 5 taking up Oxbridge places this year.

Inspection Reports

The School was judged in January 2012 and again in April 2015 to be outstanding by Ofsted, and outstanding in our church school (SIAMS) inspection, in each and every category. Ofsted judged Leadership and Management, Behaviour and Safety of Pupils, Quality of Teaching, Achievement of Pupils, and Sixth Form Provision, all as Outstanding.

The Department

Psychology and Sociology recruit strongly in the Sixth Form and typically have multiple classes in both Year 12 and Year 13. Excellent progress has been made by the Post 16 subject team in building students’ capacities as learners and providing structure and support materials for these courses.  The courses are well supported with good teaching materials.

The group of Social Science Post 16 subjects also contains Law, Politics, Philosophy and Classical Civilisation. It is led by the Post 16 Subject Coordinator and brings together the teachers of these various post-16 subjects to develop collaborative approaches to teaching and learning.

What We're Looking For

We seek to appoint a talented teacher able to teach Sociology to Key Stage 5. The ability to teach other subjects at KS5, i.e. Psychology, Health and Social Care (and KS4), Law, Politics, Philosophy, Economics, Media (and KS4), Film, Core Maths (Maths Studies) would be an advantage. Other subjects at KS3 and/or KS4, e.g. PSHCE, might also be an advantage.  The post can be between 0.70 FTE and full time, depending on the subjects offered.  Please make your preference for a full or part time post clear in your application.

SMRT was judged in April 2015 to be outstanding by Ofsted in each and every category. We were also judged outstanding in our last church school (SIAMS) inspection in March 2017. Leaders and the highly effective governing body ensure that students’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development are given the highest possible priority.” “The promotion of students’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural education is extremely impressive and contributes enormously to the welcoming ethos of the school. Equality of opportunity is vigorously promoted; discrimination in any form is not tolerated. Students are highly reflective about matters of faith and personal responsibility; their social awareness is remarkably perceptive.”

SMRT was fortunate to be part of ‘Building Schools for the Future’ Wave 4 and we moved into a significant new block in early November 2010. This houses Music, Computer Science, Design Technology, Science, Art, English, Maths, Learning Resource Centre, PE, and staff facilities. In addition we have a sports hall, as well as a gym and a swimming pool. Humanities and Languages are housed in a refurbished 1980s building which is also the base for Year 7 students. We also have a large Sixth Form block.
