Spanish Teaching Assistant (Part-Time: 1 day per week/0.2)

(Fixed term contract for one academic year – starting in September 2022) 

The Role 

Mount House School is looking to appoint a Spanish Teaching Assistant to work in the Modern Foreign Languages department, for a fixed period of 12 months during term time from 1st September 2022 to 31st August 2023 (the contract includes paid holiday). The successful candidate will be a fluent Spanish speaker. 

We are also advertising for sports and music graduate assistant teachers, and the Spanish role could, for the right candidate, be combined with one of these roles to create a full-time post. 

Accountability

The Spanish Teaching Assistant’s day-to-day line manager will be the Head of Modern Foreign Languages.

Key Responsibilities 

• Teach 1:1 oral lessons with Sixth Form students and help guide Sixth Formers with their oral research project;

• Prepare the material for the Sixth Form lessons and homework, which are all based on articles on particular topics, for example immigration, religion;

• Teach lessons with small groups of Year 10 and 11 students, on topics such as free time, holidays, the local area;

• Prepare materials for lessons e.g. games, pairwork activities, prompt cards and role plays;

• Meet regularly with the Head of Modern Foreign Languages;

• Liaise regularly with teachers and tutors, providing them with attendance registers and progress reports and notifying staff of any issues;

• Give detailed and meaningful feedback on student performance;

• Take an active interest in the progress of the students you teach; 

• Carry out administrative tasks when requested and assist with creation and update of displays to keep students informed about current events, items of cultural/linguistic interest or exchanges;

• Help with departmental visits and activities outside lessons;

• To check school email on a regular basis during the day and respond to colleagues as appropriate;

• Be familiar with exam board specifications and mark schemes for public exams and follow departmental schemes of work. 

Person Specification and Qualifications 

• Educated (ideally) to degree level;

• A fluent Spanish speaker with good knowledge and experience of Hispanic cultures;

• Ability to inspire and motivate pupils and a genuine passion for working with and teaching young people;

• Demonstrates high standards of behaviour and is able to model the School values; 

• Proven communication and interpersonal skills;

• Attention to detail and ability to work independently and use initiative;

• High order administrative skills, effectively manages commitments and deadlines;

• ICT competence and willingness to learn and use new technologies; 

• Works collaboratively and supportively with colleagues;

• Respects and values the different experiences, ideas and backgrounds others can bring to work and to teams;

• The emotional resilience to cope with and learn from challenging situations;
