Job overview

Contract term: Fixed Term or Permanent depending on the right candidate

We are seeking to appoint a talented, innovative and inspiring Special Education Needs Teacher of Maths to join our small forward-thinking SEN school. Specialising in Maths and Numeracy you will be teaching small groups of students aged 14-19. This is a rare opportunity to join a vibrant and well-run SEN school in North London that caters to students with specific learning needs.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Maths Teacher who has SEN experience in a mainstream or SEN school and is competent in keeping pupils engaged and progressing in their academics. The pupils you will be teaching all have EHCP’s with a variety of needs including SEMH, Autism and Speech and Language. In this role you will be teaching a wide range of ability from Functional Skills Entry Level Maths up to AS Level across Key Stages 4 and 5. The right candidate may have the opportunity to lead the subject with an additional TLR.

The Courtyard School is committed to recruiting talented, highly skilled individuals to support the teaching and learning of our pupils in a holistic sense that readies them for adult, independent life. Combining subject knowledge with an expertise in particular areas of need (such as ASD, SEMH and SLCN), our staff are deployed by the Head, Deputy Head for Teaching and Learning and Deputy Head for Behaviour and Safety to support pupils in accessing the broad and balanced curriculum offered to all learners. The team also benefits from the in-house expertise of a Speech and Language Therapist, Art Therapist, CAMHS clinician and Educational Psychologist, enabling a flexible approach to specialist intervention. Working alongside the Maths team, you will plan and teach a curriculum which is both inspiring and engaging and includes creative, lively and enriching activities. We aim to teach our students to be confident, questioning and independent mathematicians; to be able to make connections between maths in their other subjects and maths in context in the world outside.

The Head Teacher is looking for a teacher who has the ability to respond to different student needs at short notice, adapt lesson plans and have a warm but firm classroom presence. They must also be able to track progress and identify areas of need and consider appropriate interventions.

Experience in SEN is desirable but not essential. The right candidate will make forming positive relationships and finding the best methods to help students access the curriculum a priority. For Secondary Teachers looking to apply, experience teaching lower levels would be advantageous and for Primary applicants, a specialism in Maths would be advantageous. Applicants must be willing to lead by example and play a full part in the school’s pastoral care and all-inclusive ethos.

Proudly rated Good by Ofsted in all 4 categories in May 2017, The Courtyard is a mixed 14-19 year old free school in the heart of the London Borough of Islington, United Kingdom. We offer modern facilities and the opportunity to work in classrooms with the appropriate technology to meet the needs of our students. Staff are eligible to receive a free hot lunch every day and the school is within walking distance of major tube and rail stations in Zone 2 (no parking available).

Safeguarding is everybody’s business.  The welfare and safeguarding of children and young people should be of paramount consideration, whatever your role or level of responsibility is within the organisation.  All employees, panel members, independent workers and volunteers are required to ensure compliance with the company’s guidance and policy on safeguarding and are required to attend Safeguarding training appropriate to their level of responsibility.
