Job overview

An Auckland based special school from ages 5 to 21 years old is looking for two teachers with experience in working with small groups of students with Special Needs at the primary junior level and senior Transition to Work (ages 16-21yrs) in our Mt Richmond Base School. These are full-time permanent positions.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a New Zealand registered Primary teacher, with 5 years + proven experience in teaching primary/junior aged students as well as senior students with special needs in any mainstream context.
  • A knowledge of Autism would be an advantage.
  • Have a special education qualification and/or have participated in professional development that is relevant to the needs of students with special needs or challenges in adapting to regular programmes.
  • Has experience in working in Innovative Learning Environments and had training in education and programme development for the future. Is able to demonstrate a high degree of collaboration with colleagues.
  • Have a range of effective skills that assist students with to learn. These may include the use of social stories, functional analysis of comprehension and behaviour, setting SMART targets, individualising programmes, use of appropriate feedback strategies, and structuring the classroom environment.
  • Be able to develop and implement systems which promote independence.
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage and work with teams, as well as parents/whanau, caregivers and colleagues in a caring and supportive manner.
  • Have a sense of humour, flexible approach, and effective organisational skills.


You may be eligible for a $5000 overseas relocation grant from the Ministry of Education if you take up a teaching position in New Zealand. Now is a great time to come and teach in Aotearoa!
