Sommerville School in Auckland caters for students with significant intellectual disabilities ages 5-21. This East Auckland special school caters for a diverse range of students with significant intellectual disabilities ages 5- 21 years. The school consists of  40 classrooms over 13 sites including 11 attached to main stream primary and secondary schools. In 2020 the school will enjoy a significant and state of the art rebuild programme on its current site.

The Base school requires enthusiastic, registered teachers, pre-school, primary or secondary Special needs teachers, to join a team of professional colleagues to support students to develop the skills they need to be effective communicators and become as independent as possible throughout their lives. This includes a community living / learning centre for 18- 21-year olds, several classes to cater for students who have significant medical challenges and classes for those with challenging behaviours.

Ideally you will be an experienced Special needs teacher, although the school is open to mainstream teachers who have a passion for enriching the lives of students with differing educational needs. Working collaboratively with colleagues, therapists and teacher aides, you will need a sense of humour and enjoy developing supportive relationships with parents and students.

There is access to relevant professional development so just bring your passion and energy and desire to make a difference to our students. Commencement date is negotiable You may be eligible for a $5000 overseas relocation grant from the Ministry of Education if you take up a teaching position in New Zealand. Now is a great time to come and teach in Aotearoa!
