Special Educational Needs Classroom Teacher (Key Stages' 1, 2 and 3)

Abingdon House School is a unique and successful Independent Day School for Children with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), aged 5-17. The School delivers holistic and integrated programmes of education, therapy and personal development for its students. The Teacher occupies an integral role as part of the multi-disciplinary team. This team is comprised of Educators, Occupational, Physiotherapy, Music and Speech & Language Therapists and support staff.

Position:   Special Educational Needs Classroom Teacher 

(Full Time, Key Stages 1 and 2)

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

• To be responsible for a group of students, giving these students particular guidance and promoting their progress and well-being;
• Develop and adapt the curriculum and deploy teaching techniques to stimulate and meet the students’ individual Special Educational Needs (SEN) and support the students in developing academic, personal and life skills;
• Planning, preparing, delivering and evaluating educational programmes of support for students, that are appropriately individualised and differentiated to support their SEN;
• Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of students, both academic and personal development.  This includes implementing the Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs);
• Working collaboratively with other members of staff so that a coherent approach to the teaching of students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) is maintained throughout the School;
• To liaise and work closely with external professionals such as Local Authorities, Therapists, Educational Psychologists, as required to meet the individual needs of the students;
• Ensuring that the individual student in the class is supported and encouraged during the unstructured periods of the School Day such as break and meal-times to develop independence, to foster responsible and considerate behaviour, and to generalise the skills taught in therapy and teaching sessions;
• To prepare information for and attend staff meetings, case meetings, Annual Reviews and meetings with parents and external professionals in order to discuss the progress of the student and to promote the School;
• To prepare reports on student abilities and attend parent meetings in line with the school reporting cycle to identify student’s needs;
• To maintain standards of care and discipline in the School and during School activities, in line with all School policies and supporting the ethos of the School;
• Working with the Head, Senior Leadership Team and other staff on the preparation and development of courses of study, resource materials, intervention programmes, methods of teaching  and assessment and pastoral arrangements; and
• To develop planning, evaluation and assessment procedures, in line with School policy, to be used in conjunction with the scheme(s) of work to evaluate students’ progress. 

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

• A minimum of 2 years experience in working with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is required;
• Qualified teacher (QTS) required;
• specific SEN teaching qualification required;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Creative, flexible and empathetic;
• Ability to adapt teaching to meet students’ SEN;
• High expectations and aspirations for our students;
• A variety of experience in different settings, both nationally and internationally is an asset;
• Skilled at using ICT to support learning in the classroom, ideally with experience in Google Suite.
