Specialist Teaching Assistant

Varndean CollegeBrighton and Hove

At Varndean College, we believe that education should work for everyone. We’re here to break down the barriers, so people get the chance to become their best – and you will have a vital part to play as you support students with a visual impairment. Based at our outstanding campus in the green outskirts of cosmopolitan Brighton, you will closely partner our teachers to promote learning, accelerate progress and close the attainment gap with fully-sighted students.

Every day will bring different challenges as you plan lessons and adaptations, provide mentoring and tutoring support, create inclusive learning materials and build students’ skills in Braille. In particular, you will ensure that visually impaired students are able to absorb the key points of their lessons and achieve their personal objectives, and you will do whatever it takes to enhance their learning experience.

Alongside an NVQ Level 3 in a relevant discipline and Grade 2 UEB Braille, you will bring proven experience of supporting blind or visually impaired students. This will have given you the empathy to build real rapport, deep understanding of barriers to achievement and how to dismantle them, and the ability to organise and prioritise your own time and activities. Above all, you will be a true self-starter with the passion to make a lasting difference for young people from all backgrounds – plus the vision to make things happen.
