Blossom House is an Ofsted-rated “Outstanding” specialist school for children aged 3 – 19 years of age with speech, language and communication difficulties. Although many of the children have some associated difficulties such as fine motor problems or poor organisational skills, they are all within the average range of cognitive abilities.

Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) teacher

Responsible for the Whole School: Nursery/EYFS, Primary, Secondary and Post 16

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled, experienced and dedicated person to join our Specific Learning Difficulties Team and to deliver sessions and assessments for children and young people who have primary speech and language and communication difficulties and co-occurring specific learning difficulties. The ideal candidate will have excellent English skills (clear written and spoken English) and good reading, writing and numeracy skills, along with the ability to build good working relationships with children, teachers, parents and carers. Experience of working with children with Special Education Needs (SEN) is essential. Minimum level 7 (OCR or equivalent) in SpLD qualification is required. Experience of working with children and the ability to manage groups of children and cope with challenging behaviour are essential for the role.

The role involves:

• Delivering 1:1 teaching and small group teaching of maths, literacy, phonics, study skills etc.

• Delivering targeted interventions and overseeing computer based SpLD interventions and progress e.g. Lexia, Dynamo Maths.

• Carrying out screening and assessments: for base-lining, annual review reports, diagnostic reports and access arrangements.

• Training pupils in using a range of assistive technologies.

• Helping pupils prepare for exams e.g. study skills, revision and using their access arrangements.

• Supporting in the organisation and running of examinations including acting as a reader/scribe/Language Modifier.

• Supporting neurodivergent staff in the work place staff including identify solutions to challenges and providing advice on assistive technology.  

• Working as part of a dedicated, holistic team and liaising with relevant professionals concerning the pupils you see: SaLTs, OTs, Arts Therapists, etc.

• Regular CPD in order to keep up to date with the latest developments in SpLD/dyslexia and SEN, as well as JCQ CIC and legislative changes.

The ideal candidate(s) will have:

• Confidence, enthusiasm and a passion for learning.

• A relevant teaching qualification

• Level 7 (OCR or equivalent) in SpLD qualification.

• Excellent English skills (clear written and spoken English) along with good reading, writing and numeracy skills.

• A passion for promoting an inclusive, dynamic and supportive classroom and workspace.

• The ability to build good working relationships with children, teachers, parents and carers.

• Experience of working with children with Special Education Needs (SEN), particularly children on the Autism Spectrum.

• Experience of working with children and the ability to manage groups of children and cope with challenging behaviour are desirable for the role.

• The ability to manage a small group of children with complex social communication needs.

• The ability to promote positive behaviour in a nurturing environment is essential.


The role is available as either a Full-Time or Part-Time role.

Full-Time Role:- Monday to Friday (08:30 – 17:00)

Part-Time Role:- 3 days per week (08:30 – 17:00)

Annual salary: Salary dependent on experience.
