Job Title: STEM Science Technician

Grade 3, Scale Point 5 -7

The Mendip Studio School is a unique and small specialist school with the curriculum, students' pastoral care, wider opportunities and personal future aspirations, at its very heart.  We have a small, but growing team and just 140 students on roll, aged 14 to 19 years, and we serve the communities of Radstock, Frome, Midsomer Norton and surrounding villages.  This appointment results from increased numbers of students joining our role in recent years.

The Mendip Studio School needs a very particular kind of staff.  As with all educators, staff need to have a heartfelt commitment to challenging and supporting students to be the best they can be, but they also need to be committed to 14 to 19 Education, with an emphasis on developing young peoples’ skills through a predominantly applied learning curriculum, ready for employment.

Working in this relatively small school environment, staff need to be resilient, adaptable and to exhibit high levels of emotional literacy and initiative.  These skills and attributes are key to all of this - a strong community bound by professional behaviours: particularly honesty and self-reflection.

Together, our staff, our students, their parents & carers, will collaborate to fulfil the school’s unique vision and ethos. Risk-taking and creativity, within the boundaries of the Trust’s expectations, is encouraged, in order to meet all children’s needs in this ever-changing world.

The Mendip Studio School is part of the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership and located on a large modern campus that benefits from exceptional facilities and a Community Sports Centre. The school and the wider Trust are committed to supporting staff in their professional development and working collaboratively to drive towards the goal of consistently refining pedagogy and practice with a student centred mindset.

Excitingly, in September, we will be offering the new T Level in Healthcare Science and we are uniquely well placed to do so, with these industry standard qualifications being utterly consistent with the school’s mission.  Candidates with a background or interest in Healthcare are welcome to apply, as well as those from a school-based, science or laboratory based background.

Working as part of a close-knit team.   You will also have the opportunity to work with experienced colleagues.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, caring and rigorous person, with the ability to engage well with young people and in command of a good standard of written and spoken English.

Benefits include access to a local government pension scheme, a sick pay scheme, an electric charging point for EVs, salary sacrifice schemes (including cycle to work) and an Employee Assistance Freephone Helpline.

Closing date for return of applications, 4.00 pm 25th May 2022.  Interview will be held on Wednesday 8th June from 2pm.

The Somerset Studio School [Formally Mendip Studio School] is a co-educational school based in Bath and North East Somerset for students aged 14-19.

The school is small with a maximum of 300 students. Students work in smaller groups with individual support from a ‘personal coach’ who meets with them one-to-one every fortnight to develop their own personalised learning plan and to tailor their curriculum to their individual needs and aspirations.

As an integral part of their studies, students will participate in work experience. In Year 12 and 13 students will spend either one or two days per week in work.

Values and vision

The Somerset Studio School believes itself to be a place where classroom based learning and the world of work are truly integrated.

Working closely with local employers, the school aims to offer a range of academic and vocational qualifications including GCSEs in English, Maths and Science, as well as paid work placements linked directly to employment opportunities in the local area. The school firmly believes that this approach ensures students’ learning is rooted in the real world and will help them to develop the skills they need to flourish in life.

At the school, it is also believed that personalisation of the school curriculum will be further supported through a small school environment in which every student will be able to access the tailored support that they need.
