We are looking to recruit a motivated individual with a strong track record of successful professional practice and leadership or management experience at a senior level in a field of education or training that Estyn inspects.

As a Strategic Director you will provide direction, engage people, deliver results and build departmental capabilities in support of Estyn’s strategic objectives.

You will have specific responsibility for:

  • Leading on the development and implementation of organisational strategy for one or more of the strands of Estyn’s strategic objectives (provide public accountability, inform the development of national policy, build capacity) and ensuring consistent implementation across the whole organisation.
  • Strategic oversight of the delivery of provider inspection cycles and, in one case, the delivery of our work with local authorities.
  • Strategic oversight of the delivery of thematic review projects.
  • Leading the development and management of a range of key stakeholder relationships.
  • Strategic oversight of key enterprise enabling strategies and programmes.
  • Build expertise and flexibility in the workforce to meet current and future business needs
  • Manage public money prudently and to secure value for money, achieving efficiencies while delivering excellent public services to ensure maximum value to the taxpayer.
  • Contribute to the leadership of the wider public service and build capacity in the education system.

Hours of work – Five-day week (Monday to Friday) of 37 hours excluding lunch breaks

Location – Based in the Cardiff office with some travel required throughout Wales

  • Goruchwyliaeth strategol dros gyflawni cylchoedd arolygu darparwyr ac, mewn un achos, cyflawni ein gwaith ag awdurdodau lleol.
  • Goruchwyliaeth strategol dros gyflawni prosiectau adolygiadau thematig.
  • Arwain ar ddatblygu a rheoli ystod o berthnasoedd â rhanddeiliaid allweddol.
  • Goruchwyliaeth strategol dros strategaethau a rhaglenni allweddol sy’n galluogi menter.
  • Meithrin arbenigedd a hyblygrwydd y gweithlu i fodloni anghenion busnes nawr ac yn y dyfodol.
  • Rheoli arian cyhoeddus yn ddarbodus a sicrhau gwerth am arian, a chyflawni arbedion effeithlonrwydd wrth gyflwyno gwasanaethau cyhoeddus rhagorol er mwyn sicrhau’r gwerth mwyaf i’r trethdalwr.
  • Cyfrannu at arweinyddiaeth y gwasanaeth cyhoeddus ehangach a meithrin gallu yn y system addysg.

Estyn is the office of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales.

Estyn’s aim is to raise standards and quality in education and training in Wales through the inspection of education and training providers in Wales and through the reporting of its findings. 

Estyn is responsible for inspecting: 

• Early years provision in the non-maintained sector;
• Primary schools;
• Secondary schools;
• Special schools (including independent special schools);
• Pupil referral units;
• Independent schools;
• Further education;
• Voluntary youth agencies;
• Local education authorities (LEAs);
• Teacher education and training;
• Work-Based Learning;
• Careers Wales companies;
• The education, guidance and training elements of Jobcentre Plus Programmes;
• Adult Community-Based Learning.

As well as our inspection work, Estyn provides evidence-based advice that contributes to the development of education and lifelong learning policy in Wales.

The advice includes work commissioned annually by the Welsh Assembly Government on specific aspects of education and training.

Estyn is independent of, but funded by, the Welsh Assembly Government under Section 104 of the Government of Wales Act 1998.

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector and her staff are civil servants. In addition to employed staff and secondees, Estyn contracts with a large number of organisations and independent inspectors to carry out its maintained school inspections and some other work.

Estyn’s main office is in Cardiff with a smaller office in Mold, North Wales.
