Job Summary:

To perform such tasks as the head teacher directs to support the running of the school to the benefit of the young people and the community it serves.

Scope / Dimensions:

Line management / staffing responsibility: no formal line management responsibility but supervises and delegates work on a day to day basis.

Budgetary responsibility: variable by location and school size as delegated by the Head Teacher.

Planning:

To participate in the development of the education service plan by working in partnership with colleagues (within and outwith the service) by implementing national and local priorities to ensure all young people reach their potential.

To support and work with the head teacher in planning how these are delivered effectively and efficiently within the service. These responsibilities as delegated by head teacher, may include:

  1. Participation with staff, parents and young people to generate the vision, values and aims
  2. Support school management to generate and develop a whole school improvement plan which supports continuous improvements
  3. Plan the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence to ensure maximum impact that benefits the young people (curricular maps/plans)
  4. In consultation develop effective partnerships within the community which will support service delivery
  5. Developing the wider school ethos and strategic direction of pastoral care to young people

Service delivery:

To support the head teacher in delivering a high quality service, best value to the young people and the school community by ensuring that all agreed plans are implemented efficiently and effectively. These responsibilities may include, supporting the head teacher in:

  1. Participate in the leadership and good management of the school including developing the school policies which support the curriculum, behaviour and management of young people.
  2. Participate in promoting a school ethos that allows the development and delivery of pastoral care to young people
  3. Implementation, management and review the school improvement plans
  4. Contribute to the managing, developing and reviewing of the school curriculum as part of the school review cycle as specifically pertaining to their classes using it to inform future improvements
  5. Assist, record and report on the work of young people, preparing young people for examinations and assisting with their administration and providing advice and guidance to young people on issues related to their education
  6. Working in partnership with parents, other professionals, agencies and schools
  7. Teaching classes together with associated preparation and correction
  8. Responsible for the health/wellbeing, literacy and numeracy within their class
  9. In exceptional circumstances deputise for the head teacher

Quality Assurance:

To support the head teacher in developing, implementing and maintaining appropriate performance management reporting systems as a means of managing and monitoring the young people’s performance, to ensure standards are maintained, improvements developed and issues addressed in a timely manner. These responsibilities may include:

  1. Ensuring "How Good is our School" (HGIOS) performance indicators are used to support continuous development, working with relevant partners of the school community to encourage, audit to ensure a high quality service.
  2. Following HMIE guidance and advice notes taking action where required.
  3. Participate in developing, implementing and maintaining quality assurance and self-evaluation policy and procedures.
  4. Contributing to the annual Standards and quality report for the Head Teacher
