Job overview

TEACHER OF ART AND DESIGN

Full Time/Permanent

From August 2019

This permanent full time post offers the opportunity to be a part of one of the most successful Art Departments in Scotland. Dollar Academy is set in a beautiful central location, about 40 minutes north of Edinburgh.

The department has eight members of staff who bring talent and enthusiasm in a variety of skills, combined with a rounded knowledge and the ability to deliver the subject at all levels from age 5 to 18. Senior pupils are presented for SQA examinations at National 5, Higher, Higher Photography and Advanced Higher Design and Expressive.

We are looking for an individual who demonstrates a genuine love of the subject, enthusiasm for teaching it and an imaginative, creative and energetic approach to helping pupils share this enjoyment. Photography (film and editing, along with the use of Photoshop to develop ideas) has been integrated into the curriculum throughout the age groups. Higher Photography is now a popular choice amongst our Form VI and the successful applicant would be expected to deliver this part of the curriculum.

In recent years senior pupils have won top prizes in a range of national competitions including those run by the National Galleries of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy. A good number of pupils go on to further study and practice of Art and Design on leaving Dollar.

The Dollar Art and Design Department is housed in the Maguire Building and consists of a suite of six spacious and well-appointed teaching rooms, a permanent studio set-up for Form VI, a 23-unit computer suite, a three-dimensional design studio and a specialist ceramics and printmaking environment. These facilities provide for the large number of enthusiastic pupils who opt to study Art and Design in Dollar. The environment for artistic study provided in the Maguire Building depends on the continuing inspirational approach of all the staff involved, and the successful candidate is expected to bring powerful qualities of both passion and personal creative ability to the post.

The Academy has an extensive co-curricular programme in which all members of staff participate. Colleagues are encouraged to be involved in the wider life of the school.

The salary for the post will be in accordance with the SNCT main grade scale with the Dollar enhancement of 10% in addition. It should be noted that the Chartered Teachers pay scale does not apply to teachers employed by the Academy.

Candidates should either be registered with the GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration.

Applicants must complete the Academy’s Teaching Staff Application Form, downloadable from the Academy’s website, and provide a covering letter. A CV is optional. These should be emailed to recruitment@dollaracademy.org.uk

The closing date is Thursday 21st March 2019.

All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory PVG Scheme Record or Scheme

Record Update from Disclosure Scotland.

About Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational day and boarding school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for 200 years. The school is the Sunday Times Scottish Independent School of the Year 2018.

Dollar has over 1250 pupils aged 5-18, of whom approximately 75 are boarders. The school’s extensive 70 acre campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 45 minutes.

Dollar is distinguished by its excellence in pastoral care, co-curricular provision and classroom teaching.

Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study and participation in the great range of sporting, art and cultural activities on offer.

Dollar pupils undertake internationally recognised SQA examination courses and, in a typical year, over 65% of exam results are at Grade A. Although firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of school life.
