Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving and well-resourced Art Department. We are looking for an inspirational teacher to teach from Year 7 through to A-Level.

Bourne Grammar School

We are an outstanding and oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. There are currently 1,579 students on roll including 374 in our Sixth Form. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. Jonathan Maddox, the Headteacher, has been in post for over 13 years and under his leadership the school has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The school offers 240 places in Year 7. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 27 A-Level subjects, including Further Maths.

The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results

This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon.

We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-planned, well-taught and engaging.

The Art Department

The Art Department is a vibrant, friendly and supportive department within the school and consists of a Subject Leader, one full time member of staff and a part- time Art Technician.

We are a busy department, teaching all students in KS3 and currently have over 100 students in KS4.  Our Sixth Form students have their own room to develop their A Level work and we support a number of students at lunchtime and after school.

The Art Department has three spacious and light teaching rooms, an Art office and large storage area. We regularly provide work for exhibition within the school, as well as entering a number of Art competitions.  We follow the Edexcel Fine Art syllabus at GCSE and A Level to allow for a smooth transition between KS4 and KS5.

We secured 98% at Grades 9-4 in our recent GCSE examinations and work as a team to encourage and support the students to obtain their predicted grades. The majority of our A-Level students continue to study Art at university and are helped with portfolio and interview techniques.  Many often skip a Foundation year due to the quality of work produced.

Our department aims to prepare KS3 students to work independently and become well researched in Art History to enable them to work better at GCSE and A- Level.  We offer a well-balanced curriculum to students helping them to succeed in a variety of artistic techniques and processes.

The role

The role will suit an experienced or a newly-qualified teacher, with GCSE and A- Level experience and knowledge of Art History.

Working at Bourne Grammar School

The teaching staff body numbers around 90 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists and are only required to teach their own subject. Staff absence is very low as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts.

All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a high-quality laptop and other benefits include a Childcare Voucher scheme and free on-site parking.

Bourne is a pleasant, semi-rural and expanding town in South Lincolnshire. It is surrounding by beautiful villages and countryside and yet has easy access to Peterborough, Cambridge, London and the motorway network. London Kings Cross is a 52 minute train journey from Peterborough. Lincolnshire and its neighbouring counties offer a wide range of housing considerably below the national average house price cost. Primary school provision and facilities for families are excellent.

If you would like to apply for this role, please complete the application form below and send to recruitment@bourne-grammar.lincs.sch.uk by Friday 18 January 2019. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all who work here to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and satisfactory references.
