Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Art department in the secondary school from August 2019. The ideal candidate would be able to offer Art and Design up to  IGCSE and A-level.

The New English School is a large, well-established, over-subscribed co-educational  international school on a purpose built campus in Kuwait, catering for students from ages 3-18. Our students follow a curriculum based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales and study for IGCSE, AS and A level examinations.

The school was founded in 1969 by Mr. Tareq Sayed Rajab and is still owned and operated by the Rajab family. The New English School has a deserved reputation for academic excellence. Students leave the school to take up places at top universities around the world with favoured destinations being the United Kingdom, U.S.A. and Canada. In 2018 56.7% of A level grades and 54.5% of IGCSE grades were A* or A.

The school is a founder member of the regional British Schools of the Middle East organisation (BSME) and has held BSO status since 2012.  This means that the school can support teachers who wish to complete their NQT year.

The New English School  is very well resourced. All students and staff are issued with a chromebook and every classroom has WiFi, a desktop computer, projector and interactive whiteboard.

We are looking to employ teachers, qualified to work in the U.K., who have the ability to inspire students with their passion and knowledge of their subject. We also run a large co-curricular activities programme and all staff are expected to contribute to this.

In return we offer an extremely competitive tax free salary, annual return flights to the U.K. or flight allowance, rent free accommodation, transport to and from the school and local medical coverage.  You will be able to save a significant proportion of your salary. Travel links and opportunities  from Kuwait are excellent, which staff make great use of during generous holidays.

We believe that the New English School offers a unique opportunity to work in  a truly international setting where committed teachers can have an impact. It offers you the opportunity to work with students and parents who hold teachers in high regard and have high expectations.

NES Kuwait is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to enhanced background checks.

It is our people that make NES a special place. If you are interested in joining our team please get in touch and email an up to date CV, covering letter of application, details of two referees (one of which should be your current or most recent employer), and a completed application form to admin@neskt.org.

Why teach at NES?

The New English School is dedicated to developing students to become successful global citizens. Our student code, ‘I am an NES student’, encapsulates the personal qualities that we wish our students to exhibit and is central to our school ethos.

Our student body represents 80 nationalities. NES students are dedicated, focussed, creative and attentive learners. External examination results are outstanding with 57.2% of IGCSE results being A* or A, 54.8% of AS-level results being A or B and 48.6% of A-level results being A* or A. Almost all of our students go on to tertiary education around the world, including the top universities in the U.K., U.S.A., Canada and Australia.

At NES you will have the opportunity to have a positive impact on the development of some exceptional young people, who are willing to work hard to achieve their potential. Teachers who demonstrate their commitment to the development of students are held in high esteem at NES.

Working at NES

The New English School is one of the most well established international schools in the region having first opened its’ doors to students in October 1969. The school was last inspected in February 2019 under the BSO framework and was judged to be Outstanding. On our purpose built site in Jabriya, Kuwait we educate approximately 2300 students from KG to Year 13. The school is heavily over subscribed. The curriculum is adapted from the U.K. National Curriculum. In the secondary school students study towards IGCSE, AS and A-level examinations. Most subjects follow the syllabus provided by CAIE with a small minority following an Edexcel course. The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum and has a firm commitment to the arts and music. We also believe in developing the whole child and offer a wide ranging co-curricular programme.

Students start school at 8am during the week which runs from Sunday to Thursday and finish at 2.30pm. The day includes two breaks of around 20 minutes. Co-curricular activities take place before and after school and all staff are expected to contribute to the programme. The average contact time for a member of teaching staff is around 70%. During non-contact time teachers are expected to maintain high standards of planning, preparation and administration, in line with the U.K. teaching standards. Time is also reserved for meeting parents to discuss the progress of their children. Home/school relationships are generally excellent and our parents are highly supportive of the school.

The teaching staff at NES consists of a strong and committed body of experienced, outstanding teachers who are often experts in their field. New colleagues are well supported and helped to adjust to the culture of NES. You will have the opportunity to engage in regular CPD to develop your expertise. All teachers at NES enjoy a highly competitive tax free salary, rent free housing or a rent subsidy, flight allowance, transport to and from school, reliable and well planned administration and long holidays. The capacity to save in Kuwait is extraordinary.

Living and working in Kuwait

Kuwait is a small country with a rich history and close ties to the U.K. The population is made up of around 1.5 million Kuwaitis and 2.5 million expatriate workers. Most global chains of shops and restaurants are represented in the many shopping malls and complexes around the country. The recently constructed Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre and Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre are welcome additions to Kuwait, offering world class theatres and museums.

Most of the population of Kuwait lives in an urbanised area along the coastline. The school is based in a residential area called Jabriya. The brand new school accommodation is in Sabah Al Salem. Some staff also live in Mahboula while the older school accommodation building is being renovated.

There are a large number of beach and health clubs, most associated with large hotels, that offer a pleasant environment in which to unwind. There are many expatriate activities, clubs and societies including MANTAS scuba diving, Ahmadi singers, Staged in Kuwait players, football leagues, Rugby Union and golf courses. Whilst Kuwait is very hot in the summer months, the temperature from the middle of October until early May is usually in the range of 20-30 degrees centigrade with pleasant sunny weather the norm.

During the first few weeks in Kuwait the school will complete all residency procedures for new teachers. Residency allows you easy access to healthcare and the ability to travel outside Kuwait freely. An induction programme will be arranged to help you to adjust to the school and to Kuwait. Many carriers fly in and out of Kuwait offering excellent opportunities for travel during your generous holidays.

Background

The New English School, (N.E.S.) was founded by the chairman, Mr. Tareq S. Rajab and was the first private, co-educational day-school in Kuwait to offer a British style curriculum from Kindergarten to ‘A’ level.  The school is an example of necessity being the mother of invention; when, towards the end of the 1960s a demand for education with English as the medium of teaching became apparent.  In November 1969 a small nucleus of parents and students joined forces when the first classes of NES opened in a villa in Shamiyah, actually starting at Secondary level and very soon after working backwards to Kindergarten.  It was soon apparent that this educational venture was outgrowing the original premises, so a purpose built campus was opened in 1974, and to date, improvements and extensions continue to maintain an environment that allows students to thrive.

The school serves both the local and international communities, with children from over 80 nationalities and close ties are maintained with the U.K. and with other overseas British and International schools.  The New English School is a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and British Schools in the Middle East (BSME).

The mission of the school is to provide the highest possible standard of education, to place emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge and skills, to provide cultural opportunities, international awareness, to emphasise creativity, independent management and communication in all its forms and to promote an awareness of the world and its diversity.

The school has an enviable academic record and is outstanding in the region.  The New English School achieves its mission through a combination of academic and extra curricular activities.  Thus, along with a broad range of academic subjects, the extra curricular programme spans diverse areas - drama, music, sports, the arts, crafts, technology and extends to formalised programmes such as the Model United Nations (M.U.N.), the International Debating Club and the Duke of Edinburgh Award (International Award), the first school in the Gulf to offer this.  The school constantly wins local and regional prizes in their activities, most recently the ACER Project Humanity award for our environmental work. The school is the largest school recycling centre in the country, recycling in excess of 1 tonne each month.
