Salesian School is seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to teach Business & Economics. We welcome applications from trainee teachers and experienced colleagues alike.

If you are energetic, enthusiastic and love teaching children then we would be delighted to hear from you. We are always happy to meet potential applicants prior to interview; please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like any further information or to visit the school.

The Business & Economics Department at Salesian is well established and highly successful. We are a tight team of five teachers who pride ourselves on high standards and excellent results. In 2016 students achieved 84% A*-C at GCSE Business, 75% A*-B at A’ Level Economics and 100% A*-B at A’ level Economics and Business.  We are passionate about constantly evaluating and improving our pedagogy and consider ourselves to be a department that can deliver exciting lessons against a background of topical news events that bring the subject(s) to life.

Our subjects are popular with students both at Key Stage 4 and 5. GCSE Business is delivered via the Edexcel Examination Board specification with approximately 90 students in both Year’s 10 and 11. September 2017 will see the first teaching of the new specification and we have been busy preparing students to be assessed by external examinations only (i.e. without Controlled Assessment). Communication on this and all developments within the department, is always open and all staff have been fully consulted and supported in seeing through the changes.

At Key Stage 5 students have been following the new A’ Level specifications in both Economics (A) & Business and we would normally expect to have about eight classes across the two years. We also offer the BTEC course in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship which provides a vocational option for those students who enjoy elements of coursework in addition to examinations as a means of assessment. We expect to have one class in Year 12 and one in Year 13 next year.  Extra-curricular activities include annual visits for A’ level Students to The Royal Economic Society Annual Public Lecture.

The Young Enterprise scheme attracts students from a range of subjects who set up and run their own company for a year, and take part in the competition. Salesian has a good record of success at regional level.  We are extremely proud of our department at Salesian and look forward to welcoming a colleague who is as passionate about the subject and the future success of our students as we are.

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
