Job overview

The Post and the Department

This is an opportunity to join a forward thinking, and academically ambitious department. The post has arisen due to expansion of numbers taking Business at A level in the Sixth Form and at GCSE at the International School.

In the Sixth Form you will join a department of three other teachers, also working closely with the Economics department, which comprises four further teachers. In the International School you will work with a team of two teachers.

The role will initially involve teaching Business in the Sixth Form and possibly GCSE at the International School. In future years there could also be the possibility of teaching A Level Economics. Experience of teaching at A level is highly desirable, though not essential as the department is supportive and well resourced.

Although Business has enjoyed significant exam success at both A level and GCSE, we pride ourselves on not being exam-centric in our approach but look to develop a depth of business decision making understanding rather than just an expertise in how to pass exams. Students often progress to studying Management at University but not exclusively, with a growing proportion following their entrepreneurial instincts.

In the Sixth Form the department has approximately 90 Business students across years 12 and 13. At A level students study the AQA Business specification that encourages them to make critical appraisals of business decisions. In Year 12 they study tactical decision making which then progresses onto strategic decision making in Year 13. The Business department is led by Jonathan Young, working closely with Fraser Daly (Head of Economics). Both departments are highly experienced with both senior and assistant examiners of Business and Economics within the teams. Both departments have significant experience down the years of integrating new staff with a variety of different levels of experience and making them feel a valuable and welcome part of the department.

At the International school, the GCSE option (1yr and 2yr pathways) is a rapidly growing and popular option with about 60 students studying Business. At GCSE students study the AQA GCSE specification that introduces them to the business world with Pamela Mossman leading the team (Head of Subject in the International School).

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
