Job overview

Teacher of Business - To start April 2023

We are seeking to appoint a full-time teacher of GCSE and A Level Business to be based mainly at our international school teaching GCSE Business, with a small amount of A Level Business at our Sixth Form Centre.

This is an opportunity to join a forward thinking, and academically ambitious department.

The post

At the International school, the GCSE option (1yr and 2yr pathways) is a rapidly growing and popular option with about 60 students studying Business. At GCSE students study the AQA GCSE specification that introduces them to the business world.

In the Sixth Form the department has approximately 90 Business students across years 12 and 13. At A level students study the AQA Business specification that encourages them to make critical appraisals of business decisions. In Year 12 they study tactical decision making which then progresses onto strategic decision making in Year 13.

The department consists of three other teachers and is based across both the Sixth Form and the International school. The Business department also work closely with the Economics department, which comprises four further teachers.

Although Business has enjoyed significant exam success at both A level and GCSE, we pride ourselves on not being exam-centric in our approach but look to develop a depth of business decision making understanding rather than just an expertise in how to pass exams. Students often progress to studying Management at University but not exclusively, with a growing proportion following their entrepreneurial instincts.

The person

We are looking for a suitably qualified, talented and ambitious individual who will contribute to the continued success and growth of the department.

A high level of academic expertise is required to fulfil this role, as well as flexibility of approach, a sense of fun, a readiness to respond to pupils’ individual needs and an enthusiastic, open approach to teaching.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate and knowledgeable about Business Management and able to communicate this with expertise and enthusiasm. d’Overbroeck’s offers teachers and students alike a friendly and welcoming environment where classes are small, and standards are high.

Necessary qualifications

All applicants will be expected to have a very good degree in Business, Management or a related subject and be able to demonstrate their teaching ability. d’Overbroeck’s does not require that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though most members of staff do in fact have an appropriate qualification.

Salary

d’Overbroeck’s has its own salary scale (comparable to, or above the national scale) and pension scheme.

Teachers at d’Overbroeck’s also benefit from

• free cooked lunches during term-time

• access to ‘We Care’ medical and counselling services

• discounted membership rates for a nearby sports and leisure club

• participation in the ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme

• fee discounts for children of staff attending d’Overbroeck’s School

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
