Cranleigh seeks to appoint, for September 2021, a strong honours graduate to teach A-level Business Studies and / or A-level Economics. This post would equally suit someone who is looking to start a career in the subject, or someone who already has some experience in the profession. The successful candidate will teach Sixth Form classes in a lively and ambitious Department, as well as taking a full part in the life of this busy and friendly boarding school.

Cranleigh is a leading fully co-educational independent boarding and day Senior School consisting of around 670 girls and boys of 13 – 18 years of age. There is also a Preparatory School in close proximity.

The Department

There are currently six teachers in the Department, and the team is a friendly and open one, committed to providing all students with the opportunity to fulfil their potential. The department has a wealth of robust teaching and extension resources, covering all aspects of the courses.  Weekly department meetings give the opportunity for colleagues to share good practice, discuss the progress of individual students and keep abreast of upcoming developments in the subject and the school.  

The Curriculum

The Department currently has 124 students, and teaches to the AQA Economics and Edexcel Business Studies specifications.  In addition, there are opportunities to push students beyond the syllabus with out-of-class lectures and trips. The Department strives to deliver strong value-add and has an excellent track record in this regard.

The  Post

The responsibilities of a Teacher of Business Studies and Economics will include:

  • teaching to the highest standard (teaching sets to be decided by the Head of Department);
  • preparing suitable teaching material for each lesson and to follow the departmental programmes of study;
  • contributing to the making and sharing of department resources;
  • setting an appropriate level and quantity of prep in line with School and departmental Assessment and Feedback policies;
  • providing written reports, report grades and summative assessment marks by the deadlines set by both the Head of Department and the Deputy Head Academic;
  • being available during drop-in clinics where students can get extra help;
  • attending weekly department meetings;
  • contributing to the preparation of students for tertiary education (including Oxbridge).

The Person

We are looking for an energetic character who can effectively communicate their enthusiasm for Business Studies and Economics, bringing some humour as well as subject knowledge with them. The successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of, and a real enthusiasm for Business Studies and/or Economics and is likely to hold a good honours degree in Economics, Business Studies or a related subject. He/she will be self-motivated and will relish the challenge presented by being part of a relatively new and forward-thinking Department. A commitment to students, the department and the wider life of the School, plus a firm grasp of curricular developments are important as are empathy, being well-organised, a sense of humour and the ability to enhance the department’s delivery and development of Business Studies and Economics.

The successful candidate will be expected to get involved in all aspects of this busy boarding school (which would normally include one evening duty per week), including acting as a tutor to a group of students within a Boarding House and some delivery of the School’s PSHE programme. All teachers are expected to contribute to the School’s co-curricular programme and co-curricular activities alongside their academic responsibilities.
