The Chemistry department at Forest School aims to encourage a sense of wonder in the world around us and use the logical deductive reasoning skills learnt in analysing patterns in Chemistry to help us make sense of everyday phenomena and be able to make informed decisions when problem solving.
With this in mind we seek to appoint an outstanding Chemistry Teacher to teach the Department’s curriculum at any of the three key stages offered by the School.
The Science faculty at Forest School occupies a central place in the academic life of the School. The subject and its teachers are very popular with pupils and academic results are some of the School’s strongest; this year we have five A level Chemistry sets.
At present the Science faculty comprises twenty two members of teaching staff, including seven chemists. The Science building has fourteen laboratories including two large preparation rooms and six Laboratory Assistants to assist with the preparation of lessons. The Department has a wide range of apparatus and a well-stocked chemical store, enabling practical work to enjoy its rightful place as a central part of the pupils’ learning. All laboratories are also equipped with Smartboards and pupils are expected to bring their own device to all lessons to use for appropriate tasks.
In Y9 pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics separately. In Y10 and Y11 a flexible curriculum allows pupils to continue their IGCSE Science by either taking Double Award Science or a minimum of two separate awards from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. All routes can lead to A level study. The continuing good results achieved at IGCSE (67% A*-A) and A level, (72% A*-B), ensure the high take up of Chemistry at all levels.
