We are seeking to appoint a teacher of Chemistry, teaching throughout the school to join us in January 2019.
Although this three-term maternity cover post is full-time, the School is always willing to consider those applicants who only wish to work part-time.
The post and the Department
This is an opportunity to join an exceptionally talented and successful department. The Chemistry department at d’Overbroeck’s is led by Dave Borthwick, and Anne-Marie Jones is Head of Years 7-11 Science. The Chemistry department currently consists of seven teachers.
The OCR specification is used at GCSE (OCR Gateway), and A level (OCR A); the students in our International School study the IGCSE (Edexcel).
There is a significant uptake of Chemistry in the Sixth Form, with around 40 students in the Lower Sixth. Results are consistently strong at both GCSE and A level; every year some students go on to study Chemistry-related courses at top universities. We run an Oxbridge/extension program to support this.
The successful applicant will be involved in teaching Chemistry at all levels offered by the school. Teachers are usually asked to teach in two of the three sections of the school (Sixth Form; Years 7-11; The International School), with this specific post involving an approximately even split between Sixth Form and Y9-11 teaching.
Class sizes are small (maximum 15 in Years 7-11; 10 at the Sixth Form), which enables teachers to gain a detailed understanding of each individual student’s strengths and needs. We value independence of thought above mere acquisition of skills, and although we seek to provide the best possible preparation for public exams we aim to do so in such a way as to foster real understanding and enjoyment of the material being studied.
We are looking for a talented and passionate scientist, able to teach Chemistry at all levels offered by the school (Years 7-13). The ability to stretch and extend students in STEM activities and trips will be welcomed.
We place a high degree of importance on strong academic skills and subject knowledge, especially as there is a significant sixth form component to this post, as well as the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to students across the ability and age range. Flexibility of approach, a sense of fun, a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs and an enthusiastic, open approach to teaching are among the qualities we value.
Applicants should submit the appropriate application form, along with a full CV and covering letter to HR@doverbroecks.com and a signed copy sent to:
333 Banbury Road
Applications will be processed on request. Please apply as soon as possible, but no later than Monday 19 November 2018.
Short-listed applicants will be notified of the interview arrangements as soon as possible after short-listing.
