Job overview

We seek to appoint a Teacher of Chemistry with the aim of inspiring and motivating pupils to achieve and develop their full potential; to work with the Head of Department to deliver effective, engaging and interesting subject teaching and to support the School’s expectation of excellent educational provision; to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

As Teacher of Chemistry, you will be required to deliver a coherent, well-balanced academic, pastoral or co-curricular programme throughout the School for pupils of all abilities. The Chemistry department currently offers Chemistry across all year groups, including IGCSE, IB and A-Level, delivered by three teachers.

In the Lower school (years 7 and 8), we offer pupils a rich introductory course to all three major science subjects. At IGCSE, pupils will take either a coordinated Science (Dual Award) or Triple Science, if they have demonstrated a sustained enthusiasm and aptitude across all three Sciences lower down the school. In the Sixth Form, our most able scientists are encouraged to take either higher level IB or A-Level Chemistry. We also teach standard Level IB to pupils doing the IB whose interests may lie in other areas.

The department is based in a dedicated building where each teacher has a laboratory. Three subject-specific technicians support the work of the Science department which is well-resourced with textbooks, projectors, whiteboards and applications that enrich science learning.

We place a strong emphasis on providing our pupils with the opportunity to participate in lively and varied practical lessons. Colleagues collaborate in planning and development across all subject areas as well as participating in cross-curricular initiatives.

The department organises a range of trips, workshops and activities from Café Scientifique to revision days for pupils taking public examinations.

In return, as well as job satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment, we can offer a competitive salary, staff fee remission on school fees both at King Edward’s and our partner school Barrow Hills, free car parking, free use of our gym, swimming pool and sports facilities, all meals and snacks on duty and a Cycle to Work Scheme. We currently offer membership of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), if applicable. Single or family accommodation may also be available at favourable rents.

King Edward's School is a co-educational boarding and day 11-18 school for some 440 pupils, around 30% of whom are full boarders. We are an HMC school and proud of our unique heritage and place among British co-educational independent schools. For more information, please refer to our Applicant Information Pack.
