Outstanding teaching, learning and pastoral care is at the heart of what we deliver at Wakefield Girls’ High School Senior School. Our girls are motivated to achieve their very best in all they do; for us, an outstanding education is not only about academic results.

Our reputation as a centre for educational excellence and extra-curricular activities is widely acknowledged in Yorkshire and beyond. Ours is an extremely successful and happy school.

Teacher of Chemistry

Wakefield Girls’ High School is looking for an inspirational and enthusiastic teacher to join our thriving and ambitious Chemistry Department in September 2019.

The successful candidate will teach Chemistry to highly motivated students across the age range, including A level. It is also expected that they will be able to contribute to teaching across the sciences at KS3 as necessary.

Chemistry is a popular subject with high pupil numbers at A level and excellent examination results. We aim to offer varied and stimulating courses, based largely on practical work, using a wide range of resources. The Chemistry Department is superbly equipped with three specialist laboratories and a preparation room. In return, you will find yourself working with supportive colleagues and SLT, teaching motivated students. We deliver our curriculum in small classes, have high standards of student behaviour and strong parental support.

Applications are equally welcome from newly qualified teachers (for whom statutory induction would be provided) or from more experienced applicants.

The position is part time working 0.5 FTE and permanent. Salary is MPS/UPS + a Wakefield Supplement. The Teachers’ Pension Scheme is also applicable. As part of our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, the successful candidate will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Check.

Wakefield Girls' High School, a selective independent school for girls aged 11-18, first opened its doors in 1878, at a time when the educational and social emancipation of women was accelerating. It occupies an extensive site in a conservation area near the centre of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The school became independent in 1982.

Wakefield Girls' High School forms part of the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation group of schools. Some teaching in Years 12 and 13 takes place jointly with Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, the boys' school in the foundation.

Values and vision

Wakefield Girls' High School strives to create a stimulating and challenging environment and a culture of high expectation. It encourages both initiative and team commitment, develops self-esteem and confidence, and places equal value on the academic and pastoral care of girls. The school runs a peer-mentoring system with Samaritans training, offering support to younger girls in the school.

By instilling intellectual curiosity, aspiration and a love of learning, the school aims to enable each girl to achieve her full academic potential, breaking through the “glass ceiling” by being creative, brave, taking risks and rising to challenges. Participation and contribution are highly valued.

ISI report

“Pupils show maturity and sensitivity. They are supported by excellent pastoral care. They feel safe and well prepared for the next stage of their lives. Their behaviour is excellent.
