The Governors of this outstanding Grammar School wish to appoint a full-time well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Chemistry for April 2021. The ability to teach GCSE and A-level Chemistry is essential, and it is desirable for candidates to have experience teaching another science subject to GCSE. A strong degree in Chemistry is ideally sought, although candidates with a degree in a closely related discipline are welcome to apply. This post would suit a newly qualified practitioner, for whom extensive support and encouragement will be given, or a more experienced practitioner.
The Science department at WKGS has 12 fully equipped laboratories, four of which have been recently renovated. All students study separate sciences from Year 7. At GCSE, all students study AQA separate science and follow a three-year KS4; from Year 9 students have five 50-minute lessons per fortnight. A-level Chemistry remains a very popular subject at WKGS, and there are currently four groups in Year 12, with another four groups expected in September 2020. A-level students also follow the AQA specification, they have twelve 50-minute lessons per fortnight, and classes are usually shared between two teachers.
Students achieve excellent results, with 39% of GCSE Chemistry students achieving a grade 8 or 9, and 66% of A-level Chemistry students achieving A*-B grades in 2019.
There are numerous additional activities offered and the department runs a variety of trips each year, along with organising visiting speakers, in order to enhance and develop each students’ learning experience.
West Kirby Grammar School is a very successful selective girls’ school with a coeducational Sixth Form. There are over 1,200 students on roll and our results are outstanding. In 2019, our Progress 8 score was +0.76 and we achieved 61% 9-7 grades. 20 students achieved 10 or more 9-7 grades. At A-level, 70% of grades where A*-B with the average grade achieved being a B.
Further information is attached and can also be downloaded from the School’s website.
