Opportunity

St Mary’s Calne is looking for a talented and enthusiastic teacher, with outstanding inter-personal skills, to teach Classics throughout the school. The Department offers Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation from the lower school up to and including A Level. This post would suit both an experienced teacher or a newly qualified, forward looking graduate.

The Classics Department at St Mary’s currently consists of six teachers, three of whom have significant other roles.  Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation are offered to both GCSE and A Level. The teaching is shared throughout the school and the Department is well resourced.

Results in recent years have been very strong. In most years there are a number of pupils who apply to Oxbridge and other universities to read Classics. In recent years five girls have been selected to read Classics at Oxford and one girl to read Classics at Cambridge. Other Classicists have gone to UCL, Warwick, Durham, Bristol and Edinburgh.

During the year the Department organises several outings to local places of classical interest such as Bath, Caerleon and Cirencester, to the British Museum, and to plays in Warwick, Bath, Bristol and London. We participate in Latin and Greek reading competitions and attend study days at other schools. There is a strong tradition of taking the girls abroad on an annual basis: in 2014 to Sicily, in 2015 to Turkey, in 2016 to Pompeii; in 2017 to Greece; Rome in 2018 and Crete in 2019. Last year we visited Hadrian’s Wall and have planned a trip to Greece for March this year.

What we want from you

• A strong academic background and a good honours degree in Classics.
• Ability to teach A Level Latin and A Level Classical Civilisation.
• Ability to teach Ancient Greek (desirable).
• Qualified Teacher Status (desirable).
• Up to date knowledge of Classics developments for pupils 11-18.
• An empathetic, enthusiastic and well-presented person, capable of inspiring confidence in pupils, parents and staff.
• Ability to: work flexibly to fulfil the requirements of the post; prioritise; work calmly under pressure and respond positively to changing demands.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with very good written and spoken English.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills; competency in the use of ICT for administration and teaching purposes.
• An understanding of the expectations, ethos and aims of a full boarding school. 
• Committed to the safeguarding and wellbeing of children and young people.
