Job overview
The Grange is seeking to recruit a Teacher of Classics on a full time and permanent basis. This would be to commence in September 2018.
The Classics Department is a team that brings a passion about all aspects of the Ancient World – linguistic, literary, cultural and historical to The Grange School. The department caters to the many different ways that Grange students engage with the Ancient World – from introducing them to Latin in Year 7 to preparing students for A-Level and beyond, and each member of the department helps with the responsibility for planning and delivering this. Latin is taught to all students in Key Stage 3. Latin is offered at GCSE and Classical Civilisation and Latin at A-Level (OCR for all).
The successful applicant will be responsible for the teaching and learning of Latin and Classical Civilisation to Senior School students at The Grange School and the role would therefore include teaching the subjects up to A-Level standard.
Exam results in the Classics department have been good, in line with those of the rest of the school, with most A-Level Latin and Classical Civilisation candidates getting A or A* grades, with a few Grade B’s over the past few years. Over the past six years, GCSE results have averaged just under 50% A*-A for Classical Civilisation and over 80% for Latin.
Please see the accompanying job pack which is also available via the schools website for further information.
Closing Monday 27th November 2017 at 12 noon.

About The Grange School
The Grange School has been one of the great success stories of independent education over the past forty years. The school was founded in 1933 as a Kindergarten and Preparatory School. In 1977, the Governors took the major step of developing secondary education and since 1978 the school has grown steadily and developed an outstanding academic reputation. Today, The Grange has a total enrolment of 1209 students with 411 in the Junior School (4-11 years) and 798 in the Senior School. It is consistently one of the best performing schools in Cheshire and undoubtedly among the very best independent co-educational day schools in the country.
Our academic results speak for themselves; we are consistently one of the highest ranking co-educational independent schools in the country. In 2024, 21% of GCSE entries were awarded grade 9. At A Level (in 2024), 26% of entries were awarded an A* grade. Thanks to these excellent results, 90% of our leavers went on to join their first-choice university.
More importantly we are a very happy school. The relationship between staff and students is exceptional; although very busy and, at times, pressurised, it is a pleasure to work and study in such a friendly environment. Expectations of teachers and pupils are high, but this serves both to stimulate achievement and provide reward.
We understand our chief purpose to be to help produce young people who truly flourish and find fulfilment as adults. We try to do this by helping them to identify and develop their unique combination of strengths, talents and passions, and to challenge them to find a purpose for their lives which such attributes can serve.
