Job overview

The Governors of NGHS wish to appoint a Teacher of Computing from September 2019. This is a permanent post, either full or part time and on MPS or UPS pay scales. Experience delivering Computing in KS3 and at GCSE is essential and we are very keen to appoint a colleague with A-level expertise. The successful applicant will join a supportive faculty, led by the Head of Maths. S/he will be the main teacher of Computing in the school and therefore will have the benefit of considerable autonomy with regard to curriculum content and examination board choice, whilst also the responsibility of teaching a number of examination groups and the full range of year groups from Year 7 to Sixth Form. There is no teaching expected outside of specialism.

NGHS has recently been ranked #1 in both Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire for public examination results and a lot is achieved both in and outside the classroom. Our colleagues work very hard to support students to achieve their best and  professional and personal support is offered to all. Staff wellbeing is valued and all staff benefit from free tea/coffee/milk, flu jabs, a new colleague buddy system, social events and an understanding approach to attendance at family and child events such as nativities, sports days and personal emergencies. There is free car parking on site and plenty of opportunities to travel the world with students visiting Russia, India, Bosnia, France, Belgium and Germany this year alone.

Finally, we must comment on our students. They are a delight to teach and support. They are focused, attentive in lessons and keen to do their best. NGHS is a school where you can teach without the need to control unruly behaviour and whilst the students have very high expectations of their teachers, there is a genuine desire to please and to work with staff to achieve the best outcomes. We look forward to receiving your application.

Please download further details below. Please apply using the application form. CVs are not accepted. Recruitment agencies are kindly requested not to respond at this time.

The School is committed to safer recruitment practice. An enhanced DBS check is required for this post as well as a certificate of good conduct for any country outside the UK where an applicant may have lived or worked. We can support you in this process if you are appointed.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr M J Scott,  Headteacher via  headteacher@nghs.org.uk

Closing date: Monday 25 March at 9am.

Newport Girls’ High School is a girls' grammar school located in the market town of Newport, Shropshire. With around 680 pupils aged 11-18, the school is a selective academy, with entrance examinations required of any prospective students.

In 2019, the School was successful in gaining £2.3m to expand further under the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund. An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.

The school’s sixth form is also open to students from other local schools. Newport Girls' High School converted to an academy in 2012 and operates under its own trust.

Values and vision

Newport Girls' High School takes great pride in its strong reputation for academic excellence. The secondary school works hard to provide a high-quality curriculum with a broad range of subjects. Teachers also seek to ensure that pupils have a caring and comfortable environment in which to learn.

The school day at Newport runs from 8.50am until 3.45pm in order to make time for daily assemblies and longer breaks. A wide variety of extra-curricular activities is available including sports such as fencing, netball and hockey.

Students join NGHS from Newport, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Market Drayton and villages in between. Around 40% of students live in Newport.

Ofsted report (November 2022)

"Leaders and teachers are highly ambitious for all pupils throughout the school, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They make sure that the most important knowledge and skills in each subject are taught in the most effective sequence."

"Pupils rapidly develop the exceptionally positive learning behaviours expected by leaders and teachers. There is no disruption of lessons."
