Job overview

Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 13 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.

St David’s High School Dalkeith is looking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic full time permanent Teacher of Craft, Design and Technology to join a successful teaching team in Midlothian’s most improved secondary school.

Our current roll stands at around 600 drawn from the towns and villages across Midlothian and Musselburgh. We have a number of placing requests every year from families who are attracted by the caring and inclusive environment our school offers as well as the greatly improved exam results over recent years. Our students are our greatest assets and we are very proud of their successes and achievements and we are a true comprehensive school
We are a Roman Catholic School and as such Catholic Church Approval must be granted for staff appointed to teaching posts in the school (please see SCES website). We are committed to providing a welcoming learning environment for all our students irrespective of religious faith with the majority of our students and staff from non-Catholic backgrounds who support our caring and inclusive school ethos.

The school management team consists of Headteacher; 2 Deputy Headteachers; 9 Principal Teachers (Curriculum Leaders); 3 Heads of House and a Principal Teacher - Inclusion.
In recent years we have enjoyed recognition nationally for our work on building resilience in our learners working in partnership with Napier University and our cluster primary schools. Our students have also enjoyed opportunities to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities including trips both abroad and closer to home and we are renowned for the quality and standard of our music traditions.

Recently we have been engaged with neighbouring schools on the Scottish Government’s Self Improving Schools Partnership Programme and have been implementing the work of Hattie’s Visible Learning and Dweck’s Growth Mindset in our learning and teaching strategies.

The school shares a Campus facility with Dalkeith High School; Saltersgate Special School and Woodburn Primary School and is situated at the east end of the Edinburgh city bypass approximately ½ hour from junction 3 of the M8 and 30 minutes from Edinburgh city centre.
For further information or an informal discussion, please contact Donny MacDonald, Acting Headteacher on 0131 654 4702.

Applicants must seek Catholic Church approval when submitting their application for this post. Forms can be obtained at www.sces.uk.com/approval.html
