Job overview

Surbiton High School seeks an enthusiastic and outstanding Teacher of Design & Technology (maternity cover), who is passionate about inspiring, encouraging and empowering our pupils to achieve their very best in the subject of Design & Technology.

Design and Technology is taught by a team of five teachers, and benefits from excellent technician support.  The School teaches in three Design and Technology areas at present – our colleagues specialise in Graphic Products, Product Design and Textiles Technology, but teach flexibly across the different areas of expertise.  At Key Stage 3, all pupils in the School have the opportunity to study all three specialisms.  We encourage students to engage in the Design Process, which we hope, will be of lifelong benefit and our ethos is to inspire our students to take creative risks and use a wide range of traditional and modern manufacturing technologies to realise their ideas.

The curriculum is taught in specialised workshops and our extensive range of equipment includes a laser cutter, CAM router and two 3D printers. Students have access to a range of ICT packages including TechSoft 2-D Design, Solidworks and Photoshop, as well as SpeedStep and Digitizer programmes for Textiles.

In Key Stage 4, Design and Technology is a popular option as a GCSE subject.  We enter students in the new AQA GCSE qualification in Design and Technology. Pupils at ‘A’ level have the option of two courses with AQA for Product Design: Fashion and Textiles and Edexcel Product Design.

Within the department, we run several co-curricular clubs including a STEM Club and a Learning Outside the Classroom Club. The Department is busy with students attending clinics and additional sessions after school to work on their projects.
