Teacher of Design Engineering

The Stephen Perse FoundationCambridgeshire

We are the Stephen Perse Foundation. Extraordinary things happen here every day.

I am immensely excited to have been appointed as the Principal of the Stephen Perse Foundation and am really looking forward to leading the Foundation in the years ahead. I am excited because all of the evidence I have seen tells me that the Foundation is superbly well placed, both to meet the challenges, and to seize the opportunities, presented by its future as a leader in modern independent education.

Any school, indeed any group of schools, is only as strong as its people. The Stephen Perse Foundation boasts exceptional people across all of its schools and nurseries, and invests in their recruitment, development and empowerment to ensure its pupils benefit from excellent role modelling, outstanding support and exceptional teaching. As incoming Principal, I realise the central importance of continuing this investment.

At the Stephen Perse Foundation, all are united in embracing the modern world and in seeking to help our pupils to find and take their place in it, as confident, socially responsible adults. We seek to attract people who are inspired by this challenge, people who share the Foundation’s values, people who are passionate about our collective vision of developing the change makers of the future.

Role Description

The Design Engineering Department is a creative, well established and lively department that encourages students to stretch themselves with their projects and to investigate new materials and processes developing their design skills to the full. We are looking for a full time teacher of Design Engineering for September 2021. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and experienced teacher with a proven track record, teaching projects in resistant materials/Product Design to at least KS4. This teacher must have a good subject knowledge who can develop creative projects independently. We are looking for a qualified teacher with a good honours degree, keen to learn and to be adaptable to the changing needs of the Foundation. The new teacher will be required to help run some extra curricular activities, clubs, trips and competitions.

A good number of students choose to do the subject at GCSE level. This September the numbers increased by nearly 400% to 46 students. The department has close ties with our Visual Arts Department. At present, we offer a course in 3D Design which is an Art and Design GCSE endorsed by Edexcel, as well as Design Technology by AQA.

We teach types of projects that give opportunities for aesthetic flair in mixed materials as well as integrating technology such as sensors, LEDs, control and sound circuits. We also offer a very popular architecture, sustainability and product design course in Year 9. The department offers A level DT (AQA Product Design 7552).

We have a fully equipped mixed materials workshop with CNC milling machine, 3D printer and laser cutter. There is also space for our technology based projects both within the curriculum and for extra curricular work. The workshops are supported by three experienced technicians. Last summer the whole department was enlarged to accommodate increased numbers with another classroom being converted into a KS3 design and make space/CAD room.

We offer a variety of STEM opportunities for our students. For example, we have been working with the local ‘Launch Pad’ project working on projects with industry and other local schools. We work closely with the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) ; the year 9 have been involved with the Go4SET project; and in Year 12 the department runs the very popular Engineering Education Scheme. The department also leads in the delivery of a number of cross-curricular projects with an emphasis on team building and problem solving. We also have good connections with the university and local industry. We also participate and help run local technology competitions.
