Job overview

Food and Nutrition Teacher – Full or Part Time

ECT/MPS/UPS (FTE £26,948 - 42,780)

"Love, Respect, Flourish"

We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

Are you a committed and passionate Teacher of DT, with a Food & Nutrition specialism who can teach across the whole age and ability range, up to and including GCSE? Are you ready to inspire the next generation to understand nutrition and have a love of food? The role of a Food & Nutrition Teacher has never been more significant, with increasing awareness of vegan, vegetarian, macro-biotic and other diets, together with rising living costs, a rounded education in food & nutrition and the impacts on health and finances are essential to the development of all of our young people. The successful candidate will work within a dedicated team of DT teachers and support staff.

DT, and Food & Nutrition are popular subjects at St Mary’s throughout KS3 and at GCSE, with the potential to develop this into KS5. Food & Nutrition is part of the DT department which also includes Product Design, and operates a rotation of subjects on a carousel basis to all pupils at KS3.  The DT department has purpose-built facilities for the teaching of D&T, Textiles, Food, Art, Resistant Materials and Graphics.

Our Academic performance figures are consistently strong; our school has enjoyed a £7m refurbishment programme over the last few years (about to complete April 2022), the school has expanded to 6FE (with one year group at 7FE), and demand for school places has never been higher; our Section 48 report gives you a true flavour of the school – students enjoy coming to school and there are deep foundations with a strong Catholic ethos running through the entire school.

We can offer you a dedicated and supportive Governing Body, highly supportive parents, motivated staff and students, and a fantastic environment in which to work.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Closing date: 23rd May 10.a.m.  2022

Apply in writing using the forms available on our website www.stmarys.net: Teacher Application Form, Consent to Obtain References Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form.  Applicants are reminded that they should read the Notes to Applicants before completing an application. Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
