Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, energetic and committed teacher of EFL to be part of a newly developing school in Shanghai, which first opened its doors to students in September 2017. The school is being developed in association with its prestigious sister school, Concord College (UK) a renowned international college whose academic excellence places it at the very top of the UK examination league tables. Concord College (UK) is lending its considerable experience and expertise in support of this new venture.

The aim of Shanghai Concord is to create a place of learning where students can flourish in a supportive atmosphere of harmony, trust and decency, whilst committed to striving for academic excellence at every level.

Initially the college recruited students in Grade 6 (age 11) and Grade 10 (age 15) and will grow each year to eventually include all years from 6 to 12 (age 11 to 18).

In September 2018 the School will also be opening a Primary Department and is aiming to recruit students into Grades 1 and 2 in the first instance.

The youngest students follow the compulsory Chinese curriculum, alongside intensive English and bilingual extension courses. It is intended that this will lead to IGCSE courses in Year 10. The Year 11 students will begin two year A level courses in their chosen subjects at the same time as continuing an intensive course in English to prepare them for IELTS. In Concord College UK, many students apply to study at top universities in the UK and USA, with several go to Oxbridge each year. It is our aim that the students at SCBS will aspire and reach the same exceptional standard.

The successful applicant will be involved in the delivery of courses appropriate to the needs of the students, (KET, PET, IGCSE English as a Second Language) which will fully prepare them for the challenge of IGCSE and A level as they move through the school. Preparation of IELTS for university application will be essential in the senior years.

In order to improve students’ spoken English skills, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will also be actively involved in English Speaking Board exams which are available in Shanghai. This course forms an important aspect of our work in developing student confidence in spoken English. It is also expected that the department will run a wide range of extra-curricular activities (public speaking, creative writing events, theatre visits, debating etc.) to maximise the exposure to all forms of the English language and any candidate would be expected to contribute fully to this provision.

The successful applicant will have the chance to be part of a School whose goal is to become a leading educator within the vibrant city of Shanghai.

The post will be for a one or two year fixed term with a gratuity at the end of the second year. Salary to be determined in the light of qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Requirements:

· a high quality degree preferably with English as a main component

· an EFL qualification is essential and a Diploma is preferred.

· the capability of teaching English as a Foreign Language expertly and confidently to all age groups 11-18 and ability levels.

· commitment to the wellbeing and pastoral care of all students within their care.

· ability and proven commitment to being an excellent classroom teacher.

· excellent administrative, organisational and ICT skills.

· experience of SIMs, data management and timetabling would be an advantage.

· experience of working overseas or with international students would be an advantage.

· willingness and ability to contribute to the schools extra-curricular enrichment programme.
