Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join an outstanding English department. The results of the department over the past few years have been sensational: in 2019, nearly two thirds of pupils achieved a Grade 9 or 8 at GCSE English Language, with over 90% of results at A level being awarded at A*-B. Equally, 80% of pupils achieved a 7 or a 6 in their IB Diploma.

The School is looking for a dynamic, innovative and creative teacher of English, able to teach from Lower School 1 (Year 7) through to Upper Sixth (Year 13). Haileybury currently follows the Pearson IGCSE specification at KS4 and offers both an A level pathway and an IB Diploma pathway to pupils in the Sixth Form.

The English Department’s aim is simple: to embrace Matthew Arnold’s call and expose our students to “the best that has been thought and said,” a potentially lofty aim, but one that is central to a proper education in English. Three questions form the basis of our own sense of achievement once each pupil has left Haileybury:

  • Did they enjoy studying English?
  • Did they succeed in the subject?
  • Did they develop an interest to last them beyond school?

If, as an English department, we can answer yes to all three questions, we have succeeded.

The post holder will be required to ignite a love of literature in pupils through outstanding classroom teaching, but also through encouraging pupils to attend theatre trips, educational visits and readings as well as enter creative writing and essay competitions. We are looking for teachers to open our girls and boys up to the fascinating, complex and eternal study of literature and to encourage them to identify as scholars of the very highest calibre.

The successful candidate will be joining a very strong team and can look forward to a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as a comprehensive and supportive programme of professional development and learning.

We would welcome applications from graduates seeking employment as teachers, as well as qualified teachers.

Closing date for application is 21 April 2021.

We would strongly encourage early application for this role.
