To help provide for expansion, we are looking to an appoint outstanding teacher of English who believe that “every learner matters” to join our successful English Department.  This is a temporary full-time role for a fixed term of 1 year with the potential for the role to become permanent at the end of the year due to the growth of the school.

JOB ROLE: Teacher of English (Maternity Cover) 

CONTRACT HOURS:    1.0 (fixed term for the purpose of maternity cover)

SALARY: AT1 - AT9

RESPONSIBLE TO:                     Mrs Morgan Whibley

JOB PURPOSE: 

Under the reasonable direction of the Head of Department, carry out the professional duties of a school teacher as set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document. 

To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within English and monitor and support student progress. 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

• To teach English to groups of students from all abilities across years 7 – 13.

• To ensure that all lessons are planned with clear aims and objectives. 

• To ensure that all lessons are delivered in line with the departmental schemes of work and school policies.

• To take into account the differing abilities of students and differentiate work accordingly. 

• To encourage all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets.

• To ensure that all students are known by name and that the classroom atmosphere is positive at all times.

• To encourage and foster intellectual curiosity. 

• To deal with inappropriate behaviour quickly and effectively according to the school behaviour policy. 

• To check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of students. 

• To set appropriate tasks and challenges for homework according to the published timetable, and ensure that it is regularly marked with constructive feedback. 

• To keep careful records of student progress in line with departmental and school policy.

• To ensure that there is a high standard of display work in the classroom, which is changed frequently.

• Liaise with Head of Department regularly.

• Keeping clear records of work and student attendance registers.

• Attending meetings and workshops as required.

• Monitor progress of pupils in English against school targets.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• To work towards meeting the targets set by The Children Act 2004 and by Every Child Matters during term / non term time and weekends.

• To work collaboratively and cooperatively with other members of the wider workforce and the teaching staff

• To work positively and enthusiastically with all stakeholders and in accord with the values, spirit and practice encapsulated in The Campus Charter and other standards as exemplified in the professional learning area of the intranet 

• To be an ambassador for The Canterbury Academy Trust

• To invigilate examinations as required.

• Willingness to become mentor to approximately 12 students.

• To carry out student supervision duties immediately before school, at break and lunchtime and immediately after school as part of contracted hours.


HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

You must abide by the Academy Health & Safety Policy and to implement that policy with regard to the general duties placed upon every one engaged in the Campus. Compliance to Campus Regulations, Health & Safety Regulations and Fire Regulations.

To partake in any Health & Safety training relevant to the job role.

Qualified Teacher Status

A secure knowledge and understanding of the concepts and skills essential for students in English

A good knowledge of the National Curriculum relating to English

Have an ability to use a range of imaginative teaching strategies to engage pupils

To be able to establish a safe and purposeful classroom environment

Able to motivate and inspire pupils

Have the ability to relate well to children and adults, understanding their needs and being able to respond accordingly.

Good influencing skills to encourage pupils to interact with others and be socially responsible

Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, equal opportunities and confidentiality

Willingness to learn and develop

Ability to maintain confidentiality   

A high level of IT skills

High standards of professionalism   

Flexible and adaptable attitude demonstrating a cooperative spirit / can do attitude

Middle School

The Middle School, for students in years 7, 8 and 9, supports the transition from Primary to Secondary education by providing dedicated staffing, areas for our new Year 7 students and support and guidance. It also prepares them for examinations and qualifications in the Senior School.

Senior School

The Senior School at The Canterbury Academy provides for students in Years 10 and 11. It supports the transition from the Middle School and continues to prepare students for GCSE examinations and progression into our Sixth Form and Further Education


The Canterbury Primary School   


We are a popular, happy and friendly school which is set in spacious grounds within The Canterbury Academy Trust campus. We are close to the city but have unrivalled facilities in our state-of-the-art school, which was opened in September 2015.

The Canterbury Academy Sixth Form

The Sixth Form at The Canterbury Academy has over 600 students and is one of the largest in the county. Year 12 students transition from year 11 at The Canterbury Academy and from a wide selection of schools around Kent. Students here will benefit from specialist teachers, a dedicated team of Sixth Form staff and specialist facilities for Sixth Form students.        

Students belong to one of our four colleges; Academic, Vocational, Sport of Performing Arts and can study a wide range of courses in combination, such as BTEC and A-Levels together. We are able to be flexible and create bespoke timetables for our students, which allows students a lot more choice and variety in their study. Students can also join one of our elite academies in either sport or performing arts.  

Students at The Canterbury Academy benefit from a dedicated Sixth Form centre where they have a social space, an independent study computer room, a supported study computer room and university-style lecture theatre. Students also have use of other dedicated computer rooms in the main school, a careers library, a gym and a café.  

University is an appropriate destination for some students and increasing numbers progress to university. A planned programme of information, advice and guidance is offered to all our students, including personal statement writing, UCAS support and information regarding university fees. 


We place great emphasis on CPD. In fact, this is a great place to enhance your skills and broaden your experience. There is an excellent induction and in house development programme. Moreover, we are committed to a ‘greenhouse culture’; we seek to appoint people with potential and then develop them. All staff here are entitled to performance management linked to personalised development within our professional framework. A lot of our staff will be internally promoted after 2 or 3 years and many go on to senior promoted posts elsewhere. In recent years staff have gone on to assistant and deputy headships.
