Job overview

We are currently looking for able and experienced secondary-level teachers to teach English on Saturdays. Although our students are typically in years 4, 5 or 6 when they come to us, we prefer to work with specialised teachers from secondary schools, rather than primary school teachers whose training has been more general.

The students who come to us are typically ambitious and capable, yet we find that they have rarely been challenged by the English work they are doing at primary school. We try to kindle our students’ enthusiasm for the subject by introducing them to problems and concepts beyond those they are familiar with, and we are looking for teachers who are ready to push interested, motivated children further than is typically expected of them.

Our course is operated along our own internal syllabus using material that we have developed in-house, but we encourage our teachers to exercise their own discretion and approach the material in the way they think best. The work we set is challenging, and our course is classroom-based, avoiding the iterative tasks and computer-based learning often present in other tutoring programs; as such, we depend on our teachers’ skill and judgement to get the best from our students. We try to afford our teachers all the resources they need to teach at their best, with relatively small class sizes and a teaching assistant present to ensure each child gets the attention they need.

We are aware that secondary school teachers will not always have experience in teaching children in the age group we cater to, but we do try to emulate a secondary-level teaching environment, both in the content of our course and in the lessons themselves. For many of our students this will be their first experience of the more serious, focused English teaching that comes in secondary school, and we are hoping for candidates who can put across information to young students in a way they can understand and respond to.

Candidates will teach six one-hour classes each Saturday, and the students in each class will generally remain fixed throughout the course, giving you the chance to build up a rapport. These classes are kept at a maximum of 13 students, and lessons will take place at a  local secondary school in Sutton (SM2 6TQ.

Please note that applicants who do not have QTS will not be considered.

We provide 11 plus tuition for entrance into grammar schools in Sutton and Kingston upon Thames

We are an educational company specialising in preparing children for entrance to some of the top selective schools in the country. These mainly consist of grammar schools and independent schools in Kingston Upon Thames, Sutton and the wider Surrey area.

There are 164 grammar schools in the UK and gaining a place requires pupils to achieve an outstanding score in the 11 plus exam.

Our aim is to hire outstanding teachers to support our students in their exams. You can learn more about our 11 plus courses by going to our website.

How pupils gain entry into selective schools

To gain entry into a grammar school or an independent school, students in Surrey are required to pass a test, known as the 11 plus exam. The 11 plus exam for grammar schools in Kingston Upon Thames and Sutton is specifically known as the Selective Eligibility Test or SET.

Pupils in Surrey will take the 11 plus exam at the beginning of Year 6. The 11 plus can test students in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning, but for the grammar schools in Surrey, only Maths and English usually appear on the exam.

We have been teaching pupils to pass the 11 plus exam in London for over 15 years and have been successful in getting thousands of children a place at an independent school or grammar school.

Our approach to teaching

We give our students a chance to experience secondary school-level teaching in the sort of small, focused classes that they simply don’t have access to at their own schools. We want our students to be challenged by the work we give them, and as such we rely on the dedication and excellence of our teachers and teaching assistants to help them get to grips with the material we set them.
