Teacher of Food Technology

Salary: MPS/UPS (suitable for NQTs)

Required for September 2019

Governors are seeking to appoint a Teacher of Food Technology to join us on a permanent basis from September 2019. We are seeking a colleague who has a good understanding of the challenges our young people face growing up in today’s world yet is aspirational for them and will work hard so they can achieve their very best.  Someone who is committed, shows grit and resilience and will work hard for our students. You need to enjoy working with young people and believe it is a privilege to be a teacher.  A colleague who can take the initiative but who is also a real team player. The post is open to both experienced and newly qualified teachers. You will be fully supported by a committed staff team with a tailored programme of CPD to support your development and drive your career aspirations and goals.

Your new school

Spen Valley High School is very proud to be local comprehensive school with a genuinely inclusive ethos. As part of the Spenborough Cooperative Trust it has strong links with other local schools and good community links. Spen Valley is a successful school, having been judged GOOD by Ofsted in January 2017. However, we are not complacent, and all stakeholders are committed to working together to ensure that we continue to provide our students with a full educational experience that enables them to become successful adults.

Our exciting future

This is an exciting time to join Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and develop a truly coherent provision for our students. We were delighted to welcome our new Headteacher in September. She has 17 years’ experience in senior school leadership with the last 7 as a Headteacher.  She is committed to building on our strong foundations as a community school and is determined to improve outcomes for all students and staff.

We are confident that new teachers joining us will feel welcomed and happy and we encourage prospective applicants to visit school prior to applying.

To have an informal, confidential discussion, to arrange a visit and to find out how to apply, please contact Paula Read at Hays Education on 0113 200 3710 or paula.read@hays.com

We are an oversubscribed, 11-16 comprehensive school situated in North Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Having been awarded ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted in March 2022, this is a key time for Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and continue to develop a truly coherent and high-quality provision for our students. In this role you will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff, who are welcoming, courageous, open-minded, and supportive.

We are privileged to have been part of the Alex Timpson Programme, and our commitment to becoming a Trauma Informed School was nationally recognised in November 2021, when we were awarded the Attachment Research Community (Secondary) Award.

We pride ourselves on being ethical leaders, and leading with integrity. When joining Spen Valley you are entering an environment that balances professional challenge with support and kindness. We expect our colleagues to work hard, and go the ‘extra mile’ for our students, but in doing so we recognise that additional support is sometimes necessary and our Trauma Informed and relational approach extends to the way we work with our staff.

What makes Spen Valley High School different?

We are proud to be a Trauma Informed School and are looking for someone who fully supports our vision and approach. We know that all young people have been disadvantaged by the Covid pandemic but alongside this, we have a significant number of students in our school with complex backgrounds. These young people not only require, but deserve courageous and resilient teachers who can balance the teaching of their subject to a high standard, with helping their students to navigate their way through the challenges they face. We make no excuses about our approach; but this is not about ‘dumbing down’, far from it, we want colleagues with high expectations but who can manage students through outstanding teaching and developing strong relationships. We require someone with good emotional intelligence and who will show warmth, compassion and empathy to all our students.
