Job overview

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Geography teacher, with the ability to teach bright pupils from Key Stage 3 to A level, to join a dedicated and successful team of five specialist teachers. The successful applicant will also have the prospect of teaching highly motivated and academically accomplished students from Year 7 to Oxbridge.

Geography is taught to all pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9, and is an option thereafter at GCSE and A level. In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils study a broad range of human and physical geography to give them a grounding and base upon which to build at GCSE. In Years 10 and 11, we teach the OCR B GCSE course and follow with the OCR A-level course in the Sixth Form.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute towards and take responsibility for some of the department’s fieldwork trips. We offer an annual trip that alternates between Sicily and Iceland for our Year 11 students, as well as our residential trip to Snowdonia for our A-level cohort. Learning outside of the classroom is a compulsory and essential element at every key stage and is currently under review as we emerge from the restrictions of the pandemic. With this in mind the successful applicant would have the opportunity to shape our lower school fieldwork delivery as well as contribute to the existing trips.

There are three well-equipped, adjacent specialist teaching rooms for Geography, each equipped with interactive whiteboards. Banks of laptops are available for booking by any department and are regularly used for delivery of everything from case study material to GIS tasks.

The successful applicant will be an outstanding teacher with excellent subject knowledge supported by a good honours degree in Geography or a related subject. Early Careers Teachers and experienced teachers are welcome to apply. The ability to form good working relationships with colleagues and students is essential. It is also expected that the successful candidate will become involved in the school’s very wide range of extra-curricular activities.

The Skinners’ School is an all-boys grammar school with academy status in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The pupil roll is around 1120, with more than 350 students in the sixth form.

The Skinners’ School was founded in 1887 by the Worshipful Company of Skinners, one of 108 livery companies in the City of London, in response to a demand for education in the Tunbridge Wells area. Over the years the school site has been developed. Byng Hall, acquired in 2003, led to the development of the school’s music and drama offering, with the Thomson Theatre opening in October 2008. A new £2.5m sports complex opened on the main site in September 2012 and the Mitchell Building in 2020, home to the English department, Library and Sixth Form Centre
