Job overview

The department has consistently been extremely popular and successful and it continues to be a leading option choice for students at GCSE and A-Level. There are currently 200 students taking Geography at GCSE and over 50 have opted to study the subject at A-level. The department has generally achieved good exam results at all levels and works well with students of all abilities, including Oxbridge applicants.

In Years 7-9 all boys and girls study Geography and follow a broadly based curriculum which reflects the National Curriculum. In Years 10 and 11, the students opting for Geography follow the new AQA syllabus.  The AQA syllabus is also followed for the A-Level programme of study. Most year groups have some fieldwork experience and there are plans to increase this further. Years 7, 8 and 9 currently undertake fieldwork in the large school grounds which include a suitable river, woodland and grassland. There are also some day visits linked to Geography such as a visit to Kew Gardens. Year 10 are carrying out a number of pieces of fieldwork, including a day trip to Kingston in the summer term.  They then have the option of a fieldtrip to Iceland at the end of Year 10. This is an annual trip which takes about 75 students every year. The Lower Sixth attend a residential course at a field centre in Wales, in preparation for their coursework and a new trip to Sicily in October 2019 is being launched.  They are exposed to a variety of fieldwork examples throughout the course to help them make independent decisions about the fieldwork they want to write investigate.

The department is very well resourced and located within a stylish and purpose built Humanities block, linked to the Sixth Form Centre. There are 5 Geography classrooms, 1 of which has computers in ‘pop-up’ desks. All classrooms have Interactive Whiteboards and the school has plenty of computer rooms elsewhere which can also be booked. The staff occupy their own large office.

Applicants should be prepared to teach across the age range (11-18) and some knowledge of both the GCSE and A-level AQA courses will be an advantage. There is an expectation that applicants will have good ICT skills and will wish to incorporate ICT into their teaching.  An enthusiasm to contribute to the department in helping with clubs and trips would be expected.

Staff accommodation is available on-site.

Benefits of living and working in Weybridge

Weybridge is a small popular town with a good selection of branded and independent shops, great places to eat and beautiful woodlands and canal walks. Weybridge station offers at least four trains an hour taking only 29 minutes to reach London Waterloo station.

The College is situated on the outskirts of Weybridge on an attractive 100-acre site conveniently close to the intersection of the M3 and M25 motorways and just 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Academics

There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.

The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.

New staff and induction

There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George’s from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.

All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.

We aim to provide a caring and nurturing atmosphere at our independent day school – not just for our students. For everyone who works with us too, we want to make this an enjoyable and fulfilling environment. If you’d like to be part of it, you can look forward to excelling training and support, not to mention a range of outstanding benefits.

If you enjoy working as part of a friendly team and take a real pride in a job well done, this is your opportunity to join us here at St George’s Weybridge.
