Teacher of Geography (possible Head of Humanities)

  • Applications close Thursday 25 January, 2018 at 12 noon GMT
  • Job starts August 2018
  • Full Time, with initial 2-year contract

Garden International School is a coeducational school of around 500 students, with classes from Early Years to Year 13.  We have approximately 40 nationalities represented in our community and use an educational framework based on the English National Curriculum, leading to IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.  Many of our students have English as a second, or even third, language; these students are supported by a strong English Language Support department which works effectively to help them reach required levels of proficiency. We have a small boarding facility, and the school has a wonderful sense of community.  Class sizes are generally small, with the students well motivated, engaged in their learning and supported by their families. Year on year our results are impressive with close to 90% of students achieving 5 or more A*-C grades at IGCSE, and an IB average point score of around 34 (world average around 30).

We are looking for an energetic, experienced Geography teacher to join our Humanities team; a suitable candidate may be considered for the Head of Department position.  Experience of teaching to GCSE and IB/A level would be highly desirable.  The department comprises 5 full and part time teachers, including 2 members of SMT.  The department offers an international KS3 curriculum adapted from the English National Curriculum and at KS4 History, Business and Geography Cambridge IGCSEs.  At IB we offer also History, Business and Geography, at both standard and higher level.

The ability to offer a second subject, or previous counselling experience would be of particular interest to us, but are not prerequisites for this post.

Garden International School is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and the Thai Ministry of Education (ONESQA). We are affiliated to the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT) and the Department for Education in the United Kingdom. We are also a founder member of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA).

Ban Chang is a semi-rural coastal town in Rayong Province, about 2 hours from Bangkok and 45 minutes from the bustling tourist hot-spot of Pattaya. Thailand is a vibrant and exciting country with rich cultural experiences, it is a beautiful part of the world with year round sun and is a safe place to work overseas. The cost of living is very reasonable and teachers tend to avail themselves of high quality holiday experiences around the region.

Garden International School offers:

  • Two year contract (renewable by mutual agreement)
  • An attractive salary
  • Health insurance and accident insurance
  • Annual end of contract bonus
  • Baggage allowance (for Overseas Hire Contracts)
  • Flights (for Overseas Hire Contracts) at the start and end of the two year contract. Flights are also provided for legal spouse and up to two dependent children
  • Tuition Fee remission for up to two dependent children

Aligned with the recommendations of the International Task Force on Child Protection, we hold ourselves to a high standard of effective recruiting practices with specific attention to child protection.  Appointed teachers from the United Kingdom are required to provide, at their own cost (of about GBP 60), and before travel arrangements are confirmed, an International Child Protection Certificate (UK) (refer: http://www.acro.police.uk/ICPC/). Full police clearance, covering at least the previous 10 years, is necessary for all appointees who are working, or who have worked, in countries outside the United Kingdom. To assist newly appointed staff, there is a country by country check list for the procedures for obtaining a police clearance: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/criminal-records-checks-for-overseas-applicants

Interested applicants are asked to visit the Employment section on our website, www.gardenrayong.com, where further details are available and instructions on the application process are advised.

Long-listed applicants will be interviewed via Skype initially.

Final interviews will take place during early/mid February, in person wherever possible, in Thailand, in the Middle East or in London.
