Job overview

Thurston Community College is a thriving mixed comprehensive school in a beautiful rural setting with easy access to A14 and train line and free parking.

Thurston Community College boasts a strong sense of community, a supportive, caring ethos and a positive, friendly atmosphere. Staff morale is high (recognised by Ofsted in all recent inspections).

Thurston Community College offers an exciting, dynamic learning environment where staff work collaboratively, share a common sense of purpose and are relentless in the pursuit of outcomes of the highest quality for every student.

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring and enthusiastic Teacher of Girls' Physical Education to join our well-established department. Your commitment to education, together with your passion for physical education will enable you to inspire and motivate students across the age and ability range.

You will join an outstanding Physical Education Team who pride themselves on their innovative approach to supporting every student to achieve their full potential. You will benefit from entering a collaborative department who welcome forward thinking initiatives and are able to offer a new colleague advice, support and professional development opportunities in a friendly, positive and creative  environment.

There is an opportunity for some management responsibility, however, this is not an essential requirement of the post.

Physical Education is a popular and high achieving subject in the college with a large uptake at both GCSE and advanced level. Our specialist facilities include extensive playing fields, resurfaced hard court areas, six astroturf tennis courts, a gymnasium and a sports hall.

In addition, our facilities include a fully equipped fitness suite, two subject specific classrooms and a community sports reception area. We teach core Physical Education to Years 7 - 11 as well as GCSE, Sports Leadership and Advanced Level Physical Education courses.

The department continually strives to offer a curriculum that is truly engaging for all students. We aim to deliver a learning experience which allows all students to be confident in taking part in physical activity as well as achieving their highest standard of performance. Our extensive and thriving extra-curricular programme enables individuals and teams to succeed at regional level and beyond.

Thurston Community College is a member of CASSA (Cambridge and Suffolk Schools Alliance); PiXL (Partners in Excellence) and we offer regular and inspiring in house CPD opportunities.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection the college was graded as 'a good school which is well led and managed'. Ofsted recognised that 'the behaviour of students is outstanding; they are mature, polite and courteous in their dealings with adults and other students and they are eager to learn.'

Recently reorganised from a 14 - 18 upper school to form an 11 - 18 secondary school, we are proud of the initial successes of our new structure. Externally moderated tests in English and mathematics confirm that students at KS3 are making rapid progress and 2017 outcomes at KS4 and KS5 indicate that progress and attainment are in line with the national average and improving.

Our guiding principles are "inspire; empower; achieve". Our ambition is that every student will be inspired by learning, empowered to seize life's opportunities and will leave Thurston Community College as a happy, confident and well-rounded young person, having achieved their full potential.

Thurston village is a 40 minute drive or train journey from Cambridge, where road and rail links provide transport to central London in less than an hour.
