Job Description
Firrhill High School serves the area of South West Edinburgh. In partnership with our five associated primary schools Bonaly, Colinton, Pentland, Longstone and Oxgangs, we strive to “Provide learning opportunities of the highest quality.” Our school values are founded on respect for self and others, tolerance and support.
We are one of the largest schools in Edinburgh with a roll of over 1200 pupils and 140 staff. This provides us with the opportunity to provide a wide range of curricular, interdisciplinary and extracurricular activities that meet the needs of all of our pupils. We also provide opportunities for personal achievement and support pupils to develop skills for learning, work and life.
We are looking to recruit teachers to join our dedicated staff who will be ambitious for all our pupils and are committed to supporting our young people to develop to their fullest potential.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR A TEACHER OF HISTORY AND REQUIRE THE ABILITY TO OFFER A SECOND SOCIAL SUBJECT TO HIGHER LEVEL PREFERABLY MODERN STUDIES.
The work of the school is supported by an active Parent Council and Parent Teachers Association.
This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by the City of Edinburgh Council.
Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

Firrhill High School is a mixed, non-denominational, secondary (S1-6) comprehensive school located in South West Edinburgh. It is a mainstream state school. The roll in September 2019 was 1220 students. The vast majority of pupils will stay on until the end of S6. Over 130 teaching and non-teaching staff work at Firrhill.
The school was opened in 1960 and underwent extensive refurbishment in the early 2000s.

Firrhill High School is a school that prides itself on “providing learning opportunities of the highest quality”. Pupils are arranged into four school Houses named after areas of the Pentland hills which lie south of Edinburgh and are visible from the school grounds (Allermuir, Braidlaw, Caerketton and Darrach). House identity plays a strong role in the pastoral organisation and care for pupils. Our proximity to both Redford and Dreghorn Barracks means we have a significant number of pupils from Armed Forces families at Firrhill.
Firrhill is a school that is committed to developing the child as a whole, giving all our pupils a positive attitude and developing their good behaviour at the same time as helping them reach a high level of education. We understand the importance of strong partnerships with, and having a supportive and productive relationship with, pupils and their families.
Firrhill is a Gold: Rights respecting school, one of only two City of Edinburgh secondary schools to achieve that accolade (as at date of award in April 2019). Children's Rights lie at the centre of our thinking and actions and are part of the philosophy and ethos of mutual care and respect that characterise our school. Unsurprisingly, pupil voice plays an important part in decision making.
Our young people achieve highly and there is an improving trend in all years of the senior phase as measured against Virtual Comparator data. A growth mindset is cultivated and encouraged in everyone at Firrhill and helps us to work collectively towards our ambition of "Excellence for all, Excellence by all".
The majority of Firrhill school leavers will progress into Further of Higher Education with relatively small, but growing, numbers moving into apprenticeships. A small number of pupils will move into work directly upon leaving school. The percentage of pupils in a positive destination post-school is very high.
