Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Teacher of History to commence teaching on 1st September 2019. He / she would be expected to teach History throughout Key Stage 3 and to IGCSE level. As History is not currently part of our A-Level programme, it is essential that applicants are able to offer the teaching of another subject to at least Key Stage 3 level and this should be indicated in your application.

The Vijay International School, Praslin is a not-for-profit school owned by an association of parents who have their children enrolled at the school. The school offers educational programmes to children aged 3 years to 18 years, with Year 11 students taking IGCSE and Year 12 and 13 taking A-Level examinations with CIE (Cambridge International Examinations). We are a fully accredited CIE centre. The school is celebrating it's 10th year, having grown from 47 children to 245 during that decade with an improving local and national reputation for developing the whole child whilst maintaining excellent examination results.

We believe in challenging students to achieve their absolute best. We aim to give them a good grounding in literacy and numeracy whilst not forgetting that the other subjects in the curriculum are essential to effective progress and development. Students in Years 1 - 6  follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales with Early Childhood following the Early Years Framework. Year groups 7 - 9 follow the Cambridge International Curriculum which paves the way for the IGCSE and then A-Level years.

We pride ourselves on personalising our delivery and making sure that all students are happy and have their individual needs met. We have a strong Special Educational Needs department which identifies, assesses and responds to a student's individual requirements. For a small school we pride ourselves on the provision of extra curricular activities, annually holding multiple drama productions and competing nationally in various sports.

Praslin is a small island with a population of just over 7000 people. We feel that it is essential that our students acquire a global perspective and are aware of the different lifestyles and circumstances which exist in other countries.

We invite applications from candidates who hold a degree in Education or another degree and a post-graduate teacher qualification, or who have gained QTS through an alternative route whilst maintaining a specialism in within History. A minimum of 2 years teaching experience is required and experience of the UK curriculum is essential. Previous international experience would again be an advantage but is not essential.  Candidates should have a proven track record of delivering high quality teaching and learning to students across the ability range. Previous experience with EAL students would be beneficial. The right candidate will be able to deliver an engaging curriculum, create a secure and stimulating learning environment and motivate children to succeed.

We welcome applications from teaching couples and currently have a number of other vacancies advertised on TES.

We offer:

• The opportunity to join our outstanding team of international teachers

• Enthusiastic and hard working students

• Supportive parents

• A hard-working and supportive Board of Governors, elected from and by the parent body

• An initial 2 year contract, renewable by mutual consent thereafter for 1 or 2 years

• Good quality private sector housing

• Medical cover

• Outward flight at the start of the contract and return flight at the end

• In addition to his/her flight allocation, a teacher is allowed 50kgs of personal effects and 50kgs of professional materials.

About Vijay International School

Vijay International School Praslin is a mixed, non-denominational all-through school with sixth form situated in the district of Baie Sainte Anne on Praslin Island, The Seychelles. It is an independent, not-for-profit school that caters for students between the ages of 3-18. A smaller school due to catering for an island of only 6,000 residents, VISP is a place with strong links to the career market, providing opportunities of academic or vocational training. It was successfully inspected by Cambridge International Examinations in January 2013, allowing it to give students the opportunity to gain British IGCSE qualifications. From 2015, the school was allowed to offer A Level qualifications.

VISP opened to students back in 2008, in a location formerly taken by the old government school at Baie St Anne. It was named after the principal school sponsor Mr V.J. Patel, a man whose construction company, Vijay Construction, was behind the building of the school. A school that saw its first Year 11 students graduate in July 2014, its running and continued growth has been thanks to small activist groups committed to improving the educational life on the island of Praslin. The most recent development to the school has been the construction of a sports hall in 2016.
