Banchory Academy is a non-denominational, comprehensive secondary school, providing education for pupils aged 11 to 18 years old, drawing its pupils from Banchory and the neighbouring communities. The roll is currently around 800 pupils with enrolments coming from Banchory, Hill of Banchory, Crathes, Drumoak, Durris, and Strachan schools. The school enjoys many excellent facilities and classrooms are well equipped to meet the needs of a modern curriculum. Recent refurbishment work in Science and Physical Education has provided high quality facilities in those areas.

The earliest record of education in Banchory is of Saint Ternan and his Christian teachings from around 440 AD, which now forms the basis of our school crest. In 1878 a new school building was established on the present site of the Academy. In 1925 the school became a senior secondary and in 1946 was renamed Banchory Academy.

The Academy is a learning community committed to excellence, where educational experiences and enrichment activities are of the highest quality and are set in a culture of care, commitment and respect. Our pupils leave the school feeling valued, having been developed to their full intellectual, physical, social, cultural and moral ability. Enabling them to take up positive roles in society as responsible citizens.

Through a carefully constructed programme of learning and teaching, together with support and guidance, the majority of pupils from Banchory Academy go on to higher education, many to some of the top universities across the United Kingdom. However, we also do much to prepare pupils for the world of work.

There is so much to see and do in Royal Deeside. Banchory has recently been named one of the Sunday Times’ best places to live in the countryside due to a huge variety of desirable features such as strong community spirit, a vast range of local shops and services, idyllic surroundings and charming character. The town of Banchory is located in an area of exceptional natural beauty, and is often referred to as the Gateway to Royal Deeside. It is bordered by the dramatic River Dee and surrounded by vast stretches of woodland and rolling hills.

The school has very strong links with the local community, where we play a key and distinctive role in Banchory and the surrounding areas. Involvement with local groups, businesses and organisations are encouraged to provide a rich educational tapestry for our young people and we value the input of parents and guardians who are very much involved in the life of Banchory Academy.
