Job overview

The de Ferrers Academy bases its approach to learning on its “Aspire and Achieve” ethos. It benefits from a strong local reputation which is the reason it has increased its admission number to 410 students to meet the demand from families in the catchment area. The Academy’s expansion has been facilitated by the acquisition of a third site for its popular Sixth Form in the town centre. This has led to a re-organisation of the students, with Y7 and Y8 educated at the Dove Campus, and Y9-Y11 at the Trent Campus which are half a mile apart. We were delighted by our Ofsted inspection of January 2017 which emphasises the outstanding aspects of our work, including high levels of progress and attainment. Staff are valued by the Academy and this is reflected in the wide range of professional development opportunities which are offered both internally and externally. In recent years the Academy has developed an international reputation for learning technologies, becoming both an Apple Distinguished School and Regional Training Centre; we provide a 1-to-1 iPad programme for all students in Y9-Y13.

The Mathematics Faculty is a friendly place to work with a healthy mix of age, experience and gender. It has been a very stable faculty over the last few years with new vacancies arising as a result of an increase in student numbers. The excellent camaraderie amongst staff, as well as the hard work of the students, has helped our students achieve considerable success. Exam results have been consistently strong in recent years, with a Progress 8 score of 0.4 in 2017, and results often exceeding 80% A* - C (9 – 4 equivalent).

The Faculty, with 17 qualified mathematics teachers, is at the centre of the innovative practices at the Academy. The curriculum is designed using many principles gleaned from Cognitive Science; whilst an evidence based approach is used to determine teaching methods where possible. The Faculty also actively engage in research projects; we recently participated in the OECD’s TALIS Video Study as well as several projects with the University of Nottingham. Teaching to A level would be of an advantage.

All prospective candidates are very welcome to visit the Academy, to tour and meet with members of the faculty, and meet with our students.  We are situated on the rural outskirts of Burton upon Trent, within easy access of Birmingham, Nottingham and Derby.  As the Academy of Choice for the local area, you will feel part of a supported community and, most importantly, a warm and friendly environment in which to educate our young people.  We offer an employee reward package which includes car leasing discounts and our own independent travel consultant.

This role offers an exceptional opportunity to the successful candidate.   If you wish to join this dynamic Academy, we look forward to hearing from you.   A full job description and application details can be accessed via the Academy’s website, or alternatively please contact Samantha Lawless on 01283 247700.   Please note completed applications should be received by 9:00 am on the closing date.

Closing date: Monday 22nd October 2018
