Job overview
Teacher of Mathematics - Coordinator of Student Progress
TMR/UPR + TLR 2c £6,515
Required from Easter 2018
Phoenix is a multi-cultural 11-19 secondary school, serving 1600 (with a provision for 2008 places in September 2018) students in the north of West Bromwich close to the border with Walsall in the West Midlands. Opened in September 2010, as a result of the merger of two local schools, Phoenix has quickly established itself as one of the highest performing schools in the area.
An Ofsted visit in March 2015 recognised Phoenix as a ‘Good’ school, with a ‘no limits’ culture, driven by the uncompromising belief that all students will be successful as they move onto the next stage of their lives. Phoenix is a school that aspires to turn every child’s dream into reality; believes that there is no limit to what can be achieved and succeeds through passion, commitment and determination.
We are looking to appoint an innovative and committed teacher to the role of Coordinator of Student Progress in Mathematics. We need an excellent classroom practitioner with a successful track record of accelerating student progress, combined with the ability to disseminate their good practice effectively, inspiring colleagues and students along the way.
We are looking for someone who has the skills to improve student progress across all key stages and groups of students. You will be responsible for developing the strategies used across the department for reducing student under performance, whilst demonstrating a high standard of teaching. You will be working closely with the teachers in the team to complement their classroom practice, and with other members of the department leadership team to develop and implement coherent, effective strategies.
Phoenix is one of only a few schools nationally to benefit from the government’s priority schools building programme. In September 2017, the school moved into its brand new £30 million state-of-the art, purpose built building. The new building and its facilities will mean that Phoenix will become one of the most advanced schools not only in Sandwell, but the country. As a school constantly focussed on improvement, we are seeking a colleague to join our team who has the drive, skills and attributes to ensure we become outstanding within the next two years.
If you would like to be part of a school that is committed to becoming the very best, share our vision and you have the skills to match, we would like to hear from you.

About Phoenix
Phoenix is the largest secondary school in the West Midlands. Opened in September 2010, as a result of the merger of two local schools, Phoenix has established itself as one of the highest performing schools in the area, an accolade achieved through commitment to continually improving the quality of teaching and learning, and the provision of an exciting and dynamic learning experience for students. Our successful Sixth Form, of around 250 students, offers a broad array of Level 3 academic and vocational qualifications.
Over recent years, examination results have been constantly improving, and in 2024, we anticipate our best ever results. Phoenix’s ambition is to look, feel and behave like the best school in the country so that our students get a better deal here than they would at any other school
Phoenix was one of only a few schools nationally to benefit from the government’s priority schools building programme, and our state-of-the-art facilities which opened in 2017 are second to none. But we have not stopped there, with additional MUGAs, a climbing wall, low-level assault course and new teaching walls in every classroom with new interactive screens already added. By September 2025, we aim to have a new classroom block with gym facilities, as well as a 3G soccer pitch.
The school is proud of its achievements, its positive ethos and the excellent relationships that its ambitious and driven students have with its staff.
This is an exciting time for Phoenix’s future development and the new buildings will be a launchpad for the exciting journey ahead.
