Teacher of Mathematics

Sevenoaks SchoolSevenoaks, Kent, TN13 1HU

TEACHER OF MATHEMATICS
Required from September 2021.

The Mathematics Department
The department comprises a large, lively and exceptionally well-qualified team of 20 mathematicians. Mathematics is taught in Old School, a beautiful stone building in the heart of the campus, with classrooms enjoying sweeping views of Knole Park. The department is well resourced, and is staffed by a large body of specialist teachers who possess a wide range of experience within both Pure and Applied Mathematics.

The department teaches all students in all years, a mathematics course being included in every pupil’s IB Diploma, so every Sevenoaks student studies Mathematics for the full seven years of their secondary education. In addition to encouraging pupils to be confident and achieve well in the subject, our main aim is to develop mathematical thinking.

There is a collaborative spirit within the department, and its members’ wide range of specialised interests gives it real strength. Ideas, resources and responsibilities are shared. The Head of Department delegates specific responsibilities to members of the department and welcomes individual creativity and initiative.

Students are grouped by ability in all years, apart from Year 7. Pupils in Years 7 are taught in four class groups of about 20, and class sizes in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 range from eight to 22.

Year 9, 10 and 11 candidates are prepared for the Edexcel IGCSE course. All our students take part in national mathematical competitions, and the top five sets take Additional Mathematics alongside their IGCSE in Year 11.

There are two main courses in the Sixth Form IB Mathematics programme: Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretations. Both courses are offered at Higher Level or Standard Level. Analysis places greater emphasis on algebraic manipulation whilst Applications utilises technology to a greater extent.

The department runs several enrichment classes for highly able students, and offers a great deal of support in the form of revision classes and extra lessons. The most able IB Higher Level students pursue extension work. The department regularly prepares students for Oxford or Cambridge entrance and STEP papers. Examination results are excellent at all levels. There is a lively enrichment programme of speakers, Olympiad entry, and Mathematics clubs.

The Post
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and well-qualified graduate who will contribute to the development of Mathematics at Sevenoaks and be capable of stretching and inspiring motivated students, instilling a passion for the subject. The post involves teaching Mathematics across the year groups and ability ranges, with an emphasis on delivering engaging and inspiring lessons.
