Job overview

TEACHER OF MATHEMATICS

King Edward VI College are currently recruiting for 2 part -time, fixed term posts, one of which is to cover maternity leave, due to start in January 2020 until around December 2020.  This is an excellent opportunity for a teacher with enthusiasm and drive who wishes to work in a strongly academic sixth form college, which is committed to lively, student-centred teaching and a concern for meeting the needs of individual students.

Applications will be welcomed from well-qualified graduates, wishing to begin their teaching career by specialising in sixth form teaching. Newly qualified teachers are able to acquire Qualified Teacher Status at sixth form colleges and the college arranges for the necessary pre-16 teaching experience at one of our partner 11-16 schools. For experienced teachers, post-16 experience in sixth form, tertiary or general FE colleges and maintained or independent schools will be equally relevant. Although a postgraduate teaching qualification is preferred, applicants without such a qualification are also encouraged to apply. The college is fully committed to supporting all members of staff through staff development and in-service training.

The opportunity has arisen to join our large and flourishing Mathematics department. There are currently over 800 students studying Mathematical subjects at King Edward VI, including Mathematics, Further Maths, Statistics, Core Maths and GCSE. These students are taught by ten teachers, mostly full-time, who generally teach Mathematics with one other mathematical based subject alongside it.

Colleagues within the department strive to work collaboratively, ensuring that a wide range of resources are available centrally to both help manage workload and ensure consistency for students. Staff have successfully implemented strategies to encourage students to be independent learners with a strong emphasis on self and peer assessment, which is monitored by members of the department. The post holder will be a part of a successful and experienced team, ensuring that both NQTs and experienced colleagues have access to appropriate support.

Mathematics at King Edward's follows the AQA specification and Statistics the Pearson specification. In addition to timetabled lessons, a full time workshop coordinator supports students in additional workshops to assist student progress, as well as offering some individual 1-1 support where applicable.

Students of Mathematical based subjects are taught in a purpose build Maths building and the department embrace technology in their teaching throughout the courses offered. The majority of our students choose to attend university after their time at college, with many studying courses in Mathematics and Engineering.
