Job overview

“Outstanding insight into what a great team/department is like”

Comment made by a visiting teacher from the borough in 2019

A rare vacancy has become available in a Mathematics Department in a thriving non-selective secondary academy located in South West London.

What makes us different?

• We are one of the lead schools in the borough for the development of teaching for mastery and we host visits from other schools to observe the innovative work we have been producing (see below for feedback from teachers in the borough).

• We have adopted a collaborative planning approach to planning lessons (see below).

• We are an extremely well supported, autonomous team with a strong emphasis on teacher development and support.

• We teach mixed attainment classes at years 7 and 8

• All teachers observe each other within the department

• Meetings are predominately based on the growth of excellent pedagogy, rather than administration

• Both the Head Teacher and Principal teach mathematics, a Senior Leader takes responsibility for teacher development and supports teaching across the department

• We were the subject of a 2019 NCETM article about the use of collaborative planning to drive the success of our mastery programme:

Comments on the collaborative planning meeting from visitors:

“Outstanding insight into what a great team/department is like”

"I didn’t even think that such collaborative planning was possible!”

“I feel inspired to start a collaborative planning meeting at my school”

Comments on the collaborative planning meeting from Southfields Academy mathematics teachers:

“I have really enjoyed these sessions.  Everyone has made lots of contributions and every contribution is valued regardless the amount of experience teachers in the group have.”

“Time saving, especially planning, we have not had to duplicate the work of each other.”

“The amount of thought and attention I have been able to give each lesson I have planned for the group has been immense, compared to if I was having to plan all the lesson myself.”

Our mathematical and pedagogical ethos:

• Teaching mathematics is an integral part of equipping young people with a fundamental skill they will need for life.

• Our philosophy is that mathematics can and should be enjoyed by all children.

• Confident happy teachers equate to confident happy students ready to engage and learn.

• We pride ourselves on excellent practice to support student development.

Results:

• The Mathematics Department has consistently been amongst the top schools in the borough for progress since the P8 measure was introduced (+0.61 in 2018 and +0.53 in 2019).

• A-Level Mathematics results have been consistently excellent. We have had a positive value added score in each of the last 6 years. Our best year being 2018, when our students achieved 50% A*-A and 81% A*-B, in A-Level Mathematics.

• We have now offered Further Mathematics A-level for several years.  We have had A* Further Mathematics students every year and have recently achieved 54% A*-A and 77% A*-B.

Who we are looking for?

Our prime target is a like-minded candidate whose philosophy of mathematics education is based on developing mathematical thinking and who is prepared to deliver this to students from a wide range of backgrounds.

• Motivated and inspiring teacher.

• Deliver mathematics to students of all abilities across Years 7 – 13.

• Excellent planning skills.

• Good classroom management.

• Be able to deliver in a variety of teaching and learning styles.

• Able to switch seamlessly from teaching higher achieving students to those requiring more individual guidance and encouragement.

• 2022/23 ECT or experienced teacher.

You are welcome to visit us before applying, to join one of our collaborative planning sessions and/or make an appointment to speak to the teacher vacating this exciting role. The person leaving this post, to return to their previous career as a pilot, is happy to meet with any prospective candidates to explain what the job really entails.

Who we are

Southfields Academy was a stand-alone converter academy situated in South West London on the Southfields - Earlsfield border and in 2018 founded the Southfields Multi-Academy Trust with its partner Linden Lodge School.

The Academy is the modern incarnation of Southfields School which was founded in 1949. The school was founded on the principles of providing a truly comprehensive education for local children encompassing the very best in academic rigour and the provision of outstanding opportunities in applied learning and vocational subjects.  These principles are still the driving force of the academy. To read more about the history of Southfields Academy visit our website.

The Academy has the highest expectations of achievement and behaviour and offers a nurturing and supportive environment where it celebrates difference and ensures that everyone, students and staff, meets their full potential. The Academy values every individual and commits to ensuring everyone feels supported and listened to.

The Academy has a positive "can do" attitude, believing that the sky is its limit, and it thinks creatively and innovatively to meet the needs of its learners and the community.  The Academy's examination results and student destinations are a testament to this.

Professional Development

As one of the first 100 National Teaching Schools, most recently, and as a Training School of nearly 20 years standing, with a National Leader of Education as Principal and being a designated National Support School, the Academy has a tradition of innovation and thought leadership on education and pedagogy.  The opportunity for teachers to not only make an impact on their own practice but that of colleagues across the profession is key to this success.

All teachers have professional development opportunities, designed for their career point, and department meetings are more often than not given over to the development and refining of practice rather than housekeeping.

Newly Qualified Teachers benefit from a programme led by members of the Senior Leadership Team, there is an Early Professional Development Programme for second year teachers and through leadership opportunities across the Academy there is a culture of pushing those aspiring middle and senior leaders to reach their goal.

The Academy has supported many staff through Masters and PhD studies at university and has a tradition of growing its own future middle and senior leaders.

Staff benefits

In addition to competitive salaries, subscription to the Teachers' Pension Scheme and for Support Staff the Local Government Pension Scheme, Southfields Academy has a great deal to offer those that work there.

Staff are automatically enrolled as members of the Aspire Centre which is the Academy's onsite sports centre and adult learning facility.  Staff can use the fitness suite and the swimming pool during supervised sessions before the school day begins and on some nights after school.

Staff are provided with tea and coffee during break time and there is a designated staff counter in the dining room at which staff can purchase hot food, salads, sandwiches and soup at cost price during the school day.

The Academy has a private day nursery on site at which staff can enrol their children and at which a discount is available for Academy staff.  Subject to the position and to negotiation with the Principal part time working is supported at all levels.
